The philosophy of Ellington Street started out as a motto: "Good enough to play for a living, but smart enough not to."
Ellington Street started as a forum for local jazz composers that did something other than music for a living - a place where composers could have their material played live by other musicians.
Eventually, Ellington Street coalesced into a solid core of 4 musicians forming the basis of our sound and style - Latin jazz, jazz fusion, smooth jazz, acid jazz and be-bop.
Why this name?
Since Ellington Street is the result of everyone, we did not want to identify any one person in the band as the focal point.
Consequently, we tried to find a name that tied us to the roots of jazz, yet presented a contemporary theme.
We looked at the street sign outside the rehearsal space, and found it.
Do you play live?
Ellington is primarily a writing/recording project, however we take Ellington out for a club date or two every now and then.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It fully democratizes the music industry.
It also deconstructs the distribution channel which may not be a good thing.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Sure. Why not? We are musicians with a working problem... and this would certainly solve the problem!
Your influences?
The guitarist: Larry Carlton, Robben Ford, Allen Holdsworth, Frank Gambale
The drummer: Vinnie Caleutta, Dave Garribaldi
The Keyboardist: David Benoit, Rippingtons, Joe Sample
Favorite spot?
Seattle, San Diego, San Francisco... Lake Tahoe - pretty much anything on the West Coast with water.
Equipment used:
Hmmm... What don't we use? (we have real jobs that pay real money that afford all the toys)
We tell our wives, "It's only paper until you spend it!"
Anything else...?
"Those that would sacrifice freedom for security, deserve neither." - Ben Franklin
