Why this name?
The name "Deluge At Dawn" was actually suggested by my father. I have always had a deep fear of drowning. So, a name that evoked the same sort of trepidation within myself that the music deals with thematically seemed to fit perfectly. I had always been partial to the word "deluge"... this, I must admit, has to do with a line from a "Crowded House" song where it is mentioned, "Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup." Moreover, the idea of a sort of "crashing down" of water at the beginning of the day was similar to that of one's troubles/fears engulfing him as soon as he awoke. For, as Morrissey sang..."If I am so funny, why do I sleep alone tonight?" Those who are alone in life always tend to wake up the same way....alone...being bombarded by their sadness at first light. Deluge At Dawn.
Do you play live?
Not at the moment. There are some thoughts floating around about a series of shows at the end of the summer and into the fall months. If you cross your fingers very tightly, maybe....just maybe... the elusive Erik Andrew will take to a stage near you. As far as playing live... I have always thought of it as "performing". I love to perform the songs, be it for a room of people, or just one person. At the risk of sounding cheesie, my favourite moments have been simply playing the songs for my family and friends as they were written. I have always valued their opinons greatly, as the name validates, and enjoy hearing their thoughts on my ideas.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It changes the music industry by essentially limiting what larger labels are willing to release for fear of not making money on the project. Second, it creates opportunities for smaller, indie labels to sign and market more marginally sucessful bands on a smaller level. Third, it creates opportunities for bands like mine to be heard by a potentially much larger audience. To a project like this, the internet is everything. I have said before... I have found that I have had much greater success nationwide, even worldwide, than here in my own town-relatively speaking. So, the internet changes the entire industry. Has it made it "better"...that's an entirely different question...
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Of Course. Those who say that they wouldn't... they've never been offered that opportunity. You would definately need some better opportunity in life if you were to turn one down. If you're making $200,000 a year already...go ahead...turn it down. If you're like damn near all the other millions of rock star dreamers... of course you'll sign. You would be a fool to take issue with the points or recoup clauses. Of course I would sign... Where's the pen?
Band History:
Created by Erik Andrew in the summer of '04. Originally known as P.L.S. many years ago.
Your influences?
The main influence of Deluge At Dawn is The Cure. Secondarily, The Smiths, Morrissey's solo work, Pink Floyd, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Sundays, The Wallflowers, The Sisters Of Mercy, Love And Rockets, Kill Hannah, AFI, Guns 'N Roses, Gene Loves Jezebel and even Chris Isaak help shape our sound. We tend to be into more atmospheric, dark pop-rock in general, but don't shy away from heavy guitars in what we listen to or play.
Favorite spot?
Lincoln Park beach just south of Loyola University Chicago- where I attend. Might I add... on cold, foggy, rainy days especially.
Anything else...?
I just want to thank everyone for checking out the new "Deluge At Dawn" page. Make sure to check back for new tunes as they are posted. Finally, a few thank you's in particular go out to... Mom, Dad, Jason, Outis, Chris-special thanks, Holli Lynet', M. and Prof. Williams.
