The Material Union concept represents me trying to synthesize (and share) some new types of music I have started to absorb over the last 5-6 years -- just having fun with something new! Hope you enjoy the sonic experience! Consider the site -- and the music -- a constant, continuous WORK IN PROGRESS...

MATERIAL UNION (a/k/a Todd Franklin)
Why this name?
The idea centered around a combination, or union, of various compositional materials. I wanted to take ideas from soul, pop, jazz, hip-hop, techno, and jungle and try to fuse them into something interesting -- perhaps, even unique.
Do you play live?
No -- not yet, anyway...
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It has completely changed the manner in which people think of music as a commodity. The internet -- and MP3 technology -- must be carefully leveraged so that artists can profit from their talents. At the same time, I don't feel that powerful corporate conglomerates should be allowed to transform the internet into a police state...
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
If I felt that the powers-that-be at the label understood and supported my artistic vision, I would definitely consider such an opportunity.
Band History:
I served as co-writer and music arranger on three of the songs on Renaizzance's "The Best of Renaizzance" CD ['Committed', 'Baby (Honey, Sugar)', 'Ebony Woman']. 'Committed' reached number one on the Billboard Magazine "Bubbling Under" chart [April 1, 1995].
Your influences?
Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, Prince, LTJ Bukem, Incognito, Patrice Rushen, Sananda Maitreya, Sade, Bjork, Me'Shell NdegeOcello, Bob Marley, W. A. Mozart, Roni Size, Joe Sample, Quincy Jones
Favorite spot?
Probably New York City (I have been influenced a lot musically just by living in this area). However, I have also received positive vibes from Boston, Seattle, Minneapolis, Chicago, Cincinnati, and Detroit (love the Movement Festival!).
Anything else...?
Many artists -- both known and unknown -- have influenced me, and they continue to serve as influences to this day. You don't need a record deal to make a difference. If you have something creative to say...EXPRESS YOURSELF!
