Why this name?
It came to me when I noticed my piano teacher's email address. He had part of his first name and then the other part of the surname. I thought of melting my high-school nickname Jonathan and my surname Tomassini into an artist name: Jontom. That sounded pretty good from the beginning.
Do you play live?
I used to play live during my high school days and later on for quite a bit. I was the keyboard player able to jump on microphones, bass, acoustic and electric guitars whenever it was needed.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
If I have to consider Italy, it seems the government and SIAE are doing their best efforts in order to prevent artist rights despiting all they can say. My only hope is to give the internet the right relevance with thousands of artists uploading their new stuff everyday.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I'm pretty doubtful about it. I guess it's one of our babies' remote wishes.. dreaming of a future in front of thousands of people, selling tons of cds and having loads of radio airplay that maybe only a major could bring. But as I've said before, that was a childish dream and honestly I'd rather keep my independent path. It's like waking up at 40 realizing that you're satisfied with what you've done, withouth too many compromises or regrets. But you never know.. if there are reasonable basements I could certainly think about it
Band History:
This is part of my biography available in my demo.
It's late night in Rome. Students and workers are waiting to start another day, dreaming on their pillows while the solitaire buzz of a computer in a dark city flat pushes Jontoms melodies to life: nocturnal sounds, remote desires of a teenager
covered by daytime shyness, and an abnormal vision of rock music in a one-way street.
Luca Jontom Tomassini was born in Rome, Italy at the dawn of the videogame era. It was 1979 and those glitchy sounds he heard were to feature in the music he was to create, even at the age of five. Ten years worth of hard disks and classical piano lessons later, while the Grunge era was falling asleep, he sent his passionate melodies over the web, earning the attention of electronic music lovers worldwide. Entrancing guitars, computerized moods, soundscapes of minimalism and oriental moods make up a Jontom environment.
The first idea Luca thought of was to melt his high-school nickname Jonathan and his surname Tomassini into an artist name: Jontom. His name suddendly popped up worldwide through his awarded multimedia creations, loops and complex tracks. The second idea was to melt his rock roots and child roots, the wildness of grunge era and mathematical sounds of computers.
Obviously he can't stop : it would be going against his own nature. Hes actually working on several soundtracks for theatrical productions to be shown all over Italy and assembling an EP made of 3 authentic, brand new Jontom master pieces.
You or Nothing At All was released on March 2003 over the web. It is a collection of songs featured on several music sites and mp3 players all over the planet. You can get your copy at www.cdbaby.com/jontom or through the Jontom official website at www.jontom.net
Your influences?
Akira Yamaoka, Smashing Pumpkins, Chris Cornell, Fatboy Slim, DJ Shadow, Air, Guy Sigsworth, Eric Satie.. but honestly I try not to be influenced too much otherwise I simply can't write anything.
Favorite spot?
I have a natural propension for cold landscapes and rain. I adore Ireland and I guess a weather like Seattle's could only make me happy. And then there's my hometown Roma that it's too easy to blame all the year but has strongly marked my roots.
Equipment used:
My sounds come from a Pentium4, Intel 2800 with 1Gb of RAM, and plenty of VST plug-ins to create a sonic environment that is mysterious and sincere. They also wake up from a warm Scholze piano, an acoustic guitar, a Washburn electric guitar and noises from everyday's life, then are electronically stretched and twisted to create music that is slick, spacious and alternative.
Anything else...?
Uhm.. ya I have an attitude for grunge webdesign and the retro style! I try to design "organic" websites with a dark appeal and whenever the time smiles I like to drive and to follow the waves..
