Andrew Zito is a Melbourne-based singer/songwriter who has made a name for himself in musical theatre, but still finds time and is passionate about his own original music. His 2001 album 'Forever Passing By', sold out its entire print run in a matter of days, and left hungry anticipation for the follow up, 'Shine So Bright', released after 2002's mini album 'Baby Steps'. Andy's style is unmistakable, Australian folk/rock, acoustic and electric guitars, blended by a tight rhythm section, funky keys and organs, all providing a comfortable bed for a lyrical vocal performance.
Why this name?
Well... I didn't really choose it, my parents did. Yup. Their choice.
Do you play live?
I've been playing my material live for nearly 10 years now, at local pubs, folk festivals and private functions at home and abroad. I also work as a drummer and percussionist, both as a teacher and in theatre, so most of my time is spent in orchestra pits or on stage, when I'm not treading the boards myself as a singer in musicals. I love to play live - it's my job, and I never get tired of it!
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I have to say, I'm pretty impressed with the coverage one can get by circulating songs over the net - I've had radio airplay in the US and UK because of it, and that's a good thing!
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Absolutely, as long as I can do my thing, I'm happy for other people to be pushing it for me...
Band History:
A well-known musical theatre and cabaret performer in Melbourne, Andrew Zito has also been all over the country performing his original music in many facets of the music industry. The last 7 years has seen Andy's live act evolve from a one-man acoustic show into a fully fledged 6-piece live band, the Andrew Zito Band, supported on occasion by well known Australian acts such as Pete Murray, Anaphase and The Restless.
A sold-out run of his first independent release 'Forever Passing By' brought his acoustic stylings to the public for the first time, and has led to his 2004 release 'Shine So Bright' - the full length album that features the unmistakable live sound of this much loved band - the only difference between the album and the live show is that the entire album was produced and performed entirely by Andy himself...
Andy spent 2003 on the road with a musical, and returned to release Shine So Bright to rave reviews locally and abroad, and pretty decent sales figures too! (Not bad for a little independent, eh?)
The success of the first album, coupled with the 'legacy editions' released by legendary bands such as Weezer and Jeff Buckley has prompted a full scale revamping of 'Forever Passing By', with each track recorded featuring a full band arrangement 'as it should have been', some creative cuts and re-workings and some of the songs that were left on the cutting room floor or released as 'B-Sides', but should have been given more time of day!
Andy's 2004 cabaret show, 'Songs of the Muppets' was such a huge sellout success that it will hopefully appear in Melbourne, and maybe some other places mid 2006 - keep your eyes/ears peeled for more info! The Melbourne Bluegrass Project will also be back on Melbourne's stages in 2006, with their new show...
