Hi I am Luis Antonio Garzon. I play solo guitar Jazz, Flamenco and Classical. I also have a band a trio or more we play Jazz Latin ,Swing and Brazillian. The band is called Orpheus.
Why this name?
I really don't care about the name we just chose it because he was a muse. I didn't pick my own name my Mother did.
Do you play live?
I play private partys and at the Brownstone cafe in Fullerton.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It gives people an alternative to having to buy a CD to find out wether you like an artist or not. It gives artist with no promotion a chance to be heard.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Only with a Lawyer at my side.
Band History:
I have been playing guitar since I was five or six years old. I started with Flamenco. I studied later in life with Howard Heightmeyer, Enrique Heredia, Vince Macaluso, Jimmy Wyble and Our Band basicly gets together and plays when we have time or a gig to play. They are all seasoned musicians. The band incudes Brian Wright on Bass, who is Columbian and plays Salsa on upright bass as well as the swing and straight ahead stuff.Percussionist Sterling Kwong is the most latin of us all, he is Chinese but he is more into Latin rythms then I am. I am The Puerto Rican guitarist, who does not speak spanish and lives in Southern California. Not to be confused with LA. We also have a Flautist who is on our recordings Phyllis MacKnight. She plays some of our gigs with us.
Your influences?
I was influenced by Joe Pass, Ron Eschete, Loyal Macavoy, Paco de Lucia, Vincente Amigo and others.I am more effected by people like Bill Evans,Chick Correa, Stephan Grapelli, Django, and some of the Brazillian musicians and composers like Carlos Jobim. I listen to a lot of different music from Miles to Gentel Giant. Joe Pass is the person I listen to the most on guitar. He was very musical and just fun to watch or listen to. His Video tape on Harmony says it all. Bill Evans has the beauty I like and his music is just wonderful like Waltz for Debby. Chick got me into the Latin music. His My Spanish Heart LP is my favorite.
Favorite spot?
Yosemite Gods version of Disneyland, Maui on the island of Lani in a Hamock drinking Turtle Beach coladas, but my favorite place is the Junca in Puerto Rico. The rainforest there has the most beautiful waterfall pond to swim in.
Equipment used:
I use an Oribe Grand Suprema Classical guitar with Brazillian Rosewood back and sides. I Now play an archtop Heritage Golden Eagle Johnny Smith/ with a Benedetto pickup, Buscarino tail piece,Custom made for me by Herritage guitars in vintage orange. I have a custom Strat copy I made with a Cherry sunburst Alder body by Schecter and an ebony fretboard Warmoth neck. It has EMG 61 strat pickups that do not have noise and have a mid range boost. I mixed gold and chrohme hardware with a vintage 61 mint white pickgaurd. sounds crazy but it's a great guitar.
Anything else...?
I just like good music. I play some pop tunes and I also play blues. I like Buddy Guy as well as BB King.
