play lo-fi play hi-fi  Lookin' for a Southbound
I do play as part of a band, but what I post here is not related to that project.
Do you play live?
My band gigs regularly. After some time not performing solo, I have recently started to play some solo gigs.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
This is an evolving technology. As with all change, those who benefit from the way things are will resist the way things are becoming, but that's human nature. New technology or old, the cream will still rise to the top. With the internet one must wade through a lot of poor quality to find that cream, but once found it will not have been colored by someone else's opinion.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Only if I could be a one hit wonder, take the money and run. I've been doing this for a long time and it can be a gut wrenching way to make a living. Being an amateur is really more fun. The reality is, at my age ain't nobody gonna sign me.
Band History:
I started as a folkie way back in the late sixties, early seventies. I got to play the Gaslight Cafe and the Bitter End in NYC, two big deal clubs of that time. Since then it's been bands and musical theater, fun every step of the way.
Your influences?
My influences are too numerous to list, and they depend upon the genre in which I'm playing at the moment. My early influences were the folkies of the day, but I was more drawn to the sound and textures of multiple acoustic instruments and voices in harmony than I was to folk music itself. I would say I'm most influenced by people with whom I share an approach to music. I have no interest, for example, in guys who claim God is playing the guitar through them. I like artists who are independent thinkers and who don't feel constrained by the way things have always been done, but take a fresh look at problems and offer new solutions. Eddie Van Halen and Michael Hedges come to mind.
Equipment used:
For my own material, I use Ovation and Taylor guitars, a Carvin bass and a Boss DR770 when I need drums. I record on n-Track.
Anything else...?
I'm a music guy not a lyrics guy. If the music is good I pretty much don't care what the song is about. If I don't care for the music however, the lyrics are not going to make me like the song. People tell me I'm missing half of the picture, but there you are.
