Do you play live?
The majority of my music is created with a computer and involves no performance component. I do, however, occasionally write computer assisted instrumental music which is generally performed in a more traditional environment. While I attend various electronic and computer music festivals to travel and meet other composers, I see the concert hall and other formal environments for the presentation of music as obsolete.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet is already a great means to experience new music, although I await a point (presumably in the near future) in which a standard higher than mp3 is accesable to download quickly and/or stream in real time. I hope that sound quality on the internet will not only match but exceed that of the current CD standard.
Your influences?
We are currently in the midst of what is hopefully the latter portion of the most reactionary period in the history of music. For this reason I am unable to name any (positive) influences.
Equipment used:
I usually refrain from discussing this matter. I do not write "for the instrument," even when utilizing traditional acoustic ensembles. I prefer to work in such a manner that I use whatever means necessary to achieve the sonic result desired rather than approaching an instrument, ensemble, or electronic device in order to exploit its strengths or indigenous characteristics. The degree to which a piece is “indigenous to the medium" used to create it is an irrelevant matter to me.
Anything else...?
Recently I walked into a restroom at the California Institute of the Arts. Written above a urinal in large letters with spray paint was the phrase "Postmodernism is dead." I was simultaneously relieved in two ways.
