I am a singer-songwriter who writes and performs progressive rock and light rock ballads on piano, keyboards and guitar. I sometimes bring in my wife, friends and former bandmembers to assist with my performances, but with busy schedules amongst us, more often than not these are usually solo performances enhanced with MIDI back-up tracks, which provide a beautiful contrast of a live vocal and guitar or piano over a pre-recorded background.
Do you play live?
I love to perform live - there is nothing quite like the magic of connecting with an interested audience.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The Internet, with mp3, gives musicians a new opportunity to market music and connect with interested listeners worldwide. It gives the independent musician a chance at success totally on his/her own merits.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I like to say I would never do this - I am wary of an industry wherein some unscrupulous individuals have stolen so much from artists. Nevertheless, if I could be sure of retaining artistic freedom and some measure of control over the production, it seems it could very well develop into a worthwhile relationship. After all, it takes quite a team of support in order to reach any large audience with your music.
