Xcellent is one of the many talented emcees in the Central New York area. The up and coming mainstream and underground sound of the CNY is beginning to reach full steam. Along with local artists such as Seth Marcell, Kadia Songs, Diamond Ricelli, DJ Illmatic, DJ Swift, DJ Dream, and in house producer extraordinaire Ant Woods, Xcellent is poised to take the rap scene to another level.
Why this name?
Over the years I have had several monikers; Sinista, Jarwan, The Grim R.i.p.p.e.r., and now Xcellent. I have always strived for perfection so my current impresario was best suited. The name is self-explanatory.
Do you play live?
I have done live shows at the Third Rail in Cortland, the now defunct Frozen Paradise in Atlanta, GA., The TajMahal in Raleigh, NC., Hammerjack's in BMore, MD., and battled in numerous cities across the US.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It's like every thing else in the world. If used properly its a valuable tool that can serve the growth of hip-hop and all other forms of music well. If misused its disadvantages can hurt not only the already made artists but the up and coming artist as well.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes. The 'American Dream' is to do what you love and to get paid for it. Music, microphones, and madness is my passion. Music's like my first girlfriend, major label deals are like Beyoncee, we all want a piece.
Band History:
I have been affiliated with the local production teams for about 5 years. I have done collaborations and been included on quite a few local mix tapes (DJ Illmatic's HISS2 and F** A Dollar and A Dream). I am currently working on my 3rd album release(produced by HalfWay House Ent). I have an in-house studio available to all positive emcees (free of charge). I love to rhyme, network, and produce. I think sharing information is vital. We eat together or we starve together. I choose against the latter.
Your influences?
Stevie, Janis, Phoebe, the Temps, Michael J (pre nose-job), Phil Collins, Boots Randolf, Count Bassie, Dizzy, Ella, Mary Wells, Frankie Lyman, Jay Z, Rakim, Premiere, Dr. Dre, QJones, Siedah Garrett, the list is almost infinite.
Favorite spot?
Behind a warm a microphone is my favorite spot on earth. Followed by my studio and then Chicago.
Equipment used:
MPC2000, Kurzweil Keyboard, AudioTechnica Microphones, Alesis monitors, Soundforge, Sonar, Cool Edit, Technic1200's, and we update and import..looking to purchase the MacG5 (early August), ProTools coming in late July. WHEW!!
