Sooner or Later Entertainment proudly presents the BLOCK KAPTAINS. BLOCK KAPTAINS are comprised of two solo artists from the S.O.L. camp, SKI MASK and I.C.O.N. Both hailing from Philadelphia, PA, home of artists such as THE ROOTS, Beanie Sigel, and The Young Gunz, SKI and ICON honed their skills during their days as students at Millersville University. Both SKI MASK and ICON will be releasing solo projects in early 2005.
Why this name?
ICON: Group wise the name demands respect. Growing up there was always someone in your hood elected the captain of the block, who kept things in order. To us the whole rap game is our block and nothing goes down unless we give the okay. I'm sure plenty will try and associate the name "Block Kaptains" with dealing drugs or some type of criminal behavior, but that's not the case.
Do you play live?
ICON: Naw, I leave instrumentation and beat making to Mask and other producers in the SOL folder...shout out to Pierre.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
ICON: Hell yeah it hurts the industry! Let me break it down for you. Artists don't make a lot of money off albums unless they do 50(Cent) numbers; most of the income comes off tours and what not. So the people hurt directly from poor album sales is the label who in return will drop you if you are not moving units. So downloading and bootlegging will come full cirlcle to bite the artist in the a**. But it's good in a sense because it gets your music out if no one would hear of you otherwise. Plus it's good for the consumer to listen to you first before they cop it. Let's be frank it's a lot of garbage coming out...and who wants to spend $15 on a album with only 2-3 good songs?
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
ICON: I don't want to speak for SKI but majors, minors whatever is the most lucrative move is where I would like to end. Majors mean more fame and more endorsement, acting gigs which lead to more money. Indies(like Koch)give less promotion but give you more money off album sales.
Band History:

Your influences?
ICON: Jay-Z, Redman, Royce da 5'9', BCC,Def Squad,KRS-1...too many to name. These are my rappers' rappers.
Favorite spot?
ICON: P-h-i-l-l-y of course, born and raised. But as a whole I rep the entire PA. Sometimes I think we forget about the entire state. I treat PA like NYC. Each borough reps their own but as a whole they still love the entire NYC. Shout Harrisburg, Pitt, and all surrounding hoods.
Equipment used:
ICON: Me, all I need is my brain, my pen, and my tongue. The rest I'll hustle out of someone else(laughs).
