Navin Rai aka DJ New started getting into electronic music early on in his life through the
Prodigy Classic, ‘Experiance’ This album filled him with curiosity for electronic music, which
only grew after attending his first party in 1998. By 1999, New had acquired his first pair of
turntables. By 2000, he was organizing his own parties at the infamous And Cafe in Halifax.
By 2002, he has graced the decks all over Halifax. Now New is known all over the Atlantic
Provinces from playing in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. His influnce in
his home town is growing due to a radio spots on 97.5 FM, CKDU Halifax. Also, he has been able to
showcase his talent to a broader audience over the internet via sites like www.cyberdjs.com
The percussive style that New first started listening to is still a heavy influence of his DJ set
s. He plays Techno; mainly funky, sometimes a bit dark, but always a lot of drums and a lot of
bass. He is comparable to DJs such as Christian Smith and Carl Cox, and sites them as influnces
to his current style. "Making people dance is what I do best", as he puts it is an accurate
discription of his sets, "I try to instill my own energy into the crowd". Favourite labels
include Hardgroove, Skint, and Player.
New's past residency's include The Mercury Lounge and Out of this World Entertainment. The
Mercury Lounge, a dance bar in downtown Halifax, has had New play on many an occasion, and is
sure to have him back soon. Out of this World Entertainment has booked New for practically
every event they have thrown since day one. They specilize in promoting raves.
Currently New is getting deep into production, working on putting a small studio togather and also trying to diversyfy his DJ sets. He has done live drum machine, live bassists and live vocalists with his mixing, and plans on keeping on trying new and different stuff. Production for new is in full swing, with a few tracks you can currently check out on his website, djnew.tk
