Performing a quirky and often spooky mix of metal and circus/carnival music, with jazz, techno and industrial elements, Australian 6-piece band HEADKASE have been described as "industrial/techno flavoured circus-metal".

While Headkase play largley to a gothic audience, their high-energy shows are especially enjoyed by fans of Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Vicious Hairy Mary, Dog Fashion Disco, Carnival In Coal, and other such abstract bands combining many styles of music to create something a little fresher than your average metal band.

Crowd favourites at shows are:
"Deja Vous" (like a haunted merry-go-round), "Cocaine & Caffeine" (a jazzy number), and "Murdered & Dumped in the Willow" (an almost death metal number).

- HEADKASE have supported/opened for such acts as SKINLAB (USA), KILLING JOKE (UK), SUNS OWL (Japan), 8 FOOT SATIVA (NZ), JERK, THE TESTEAGLES, DEVOLVED.
Why this name?
It all came down to the fact that we're all insane. Various things that have happened to hurt or change us in some ways, resulting in this insanity. We're all headcases. We spell our name with a 'K' instead of a 'C' for example. Craaaazy! But that was because we later discovered there are other bands with the 'C' spelling. Some people think that just because we spell it with a 'K' we must automatically be a Limp Bizkit or Linkin Park style nu-metal band. People are narrow-minded.
Do you play live?
We play live all the time. Playing live is our number one interest within this band. We dress up, act all theatrical on stage, put on a fun SHOW for the audience, rather than just stand there looking at our feet while churning out a bunch of bland songs. We mostly play in and around our home town of Brisbane, Australia. At this stage, our only shows outside of Brisbane have been as far as Toowoomba, Ipswich, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Lismore (NSW). Our best show to date would have to be the one we played with Sydney band JERK in May 2003. Great crowd, great reception. We fed off the audiences' positive energy and had an awesome time putting on one of our most powerful and energetic shows! Headkase have also supported US metal giants SKINLAB, and UK Industrial Metal pioneers KILLING JOKE.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet and mp3s bring musicians and music fans closer together. More people can hear a relatively unknown band's music. People from Finland, Germany, Sweden, Egypt, US and UK listen to Headkase, and all we have available to the world at the moment is mp3s. So that's pretty good that you don't necessarily have to have an album out for people around the world to know who you are. Of course, an album and successful sales would be a whole lot better. And we will have one available hopefully sometime soon. It's taking a long time for us though. Many difficulties I won't go into.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
As long as that major label still allowed us our creative freedom to write music the way we want to. Many record labels mess with the band's writing process, telling them "this is what the people want". But it's our rule-breaking originality, and writing the music the way WE want that makes our music interesting and different and fun for people to listen to. There are those who like it, but also those who think it's just too weird. It's not "normal" or commercial enough for the overall general public. However, there are people who are so used to that bland, commercial top 40 stuff, that our music comes across as refreshingly different, rather than horribly bizarre. It really all depends on the individual listener.
Band History:
Headkase started their reign of terror and confusion in 2001. They played their first gig to a handful of people at the Bracken Ridge "Rumjungle" before they had a bass player. With the recruitment of a bass player, they worked their way to the Grand Final of the 2001 Queensland Rock Awards. After that experience and exposure, they began gigging regularly. They produced a demo CD called "The Beginning", featuring crowd favourite "Deja Vous" at the end of 2001. The first high-profile band Headkase supported was DEVOLVED in 2002, which took them one small step up the ladder to acknowledgement within Brisbane's competitive music scene. Airplay on 4zZz FM and various interviews in music street press and zines were a first for Headkase in 2002. 2003 saw them play 30 shows, including support slots for JERK, SKINLAB (US), and KILLING JOKE (UK), which lead to some positive gig reviews in music street press. They produced another demo CD featuring crowd favourite "Murdered & Dumped in the Willow", leading to the upcoming album. Headkase continue to work hard, despite often being classed as "Brisbane's most hated band". That said, a healthy fanbase still crawls out of the shadows whenever Headkase dare to appear on stage.

Favorite spot?
Brisbane, mainly in the city centre, as it's the best place to get a decent crowd. Playing in suburban pubs doesn't really attract many people.
Equipment used:
Drums, two guitars, a bass, keyboard, voice. You can read about the actual brands and models of equipment at the official HEADKASE website.
Anything else...?
PRESS:
"The six-piece belt out a unique brand of eerie carnival-styled metal, combining the industrial effects of a keyboard with pulsating drumbeats".
Maree Bedford - Time Off Magazine

"Their style of death metal meets Mr. Bungle got some response from the crowd, which had almost doubled by the end of their 30 minute opening set."
Simon Milburn - Rave Magazine
