Carmen Toth and Social Potion
Why this name?
Carmen Toth is my given name, and that's the name I use when I play solo. When I'm playing with my drummer, we go by Social Potion. It's a nod to my first EP "Potional" released in 2004.
Do you play live?
I have a full time day job so I play live when I can. I have played at numerous Rouge Valley Conservation Centre fundraising events in Scarborough, the Derek Lee community BBQ in Markham and the 2009 NABS fundraiser in Toronto. Some Toronto venues I've played are: Michelle's Brasserie in Yorkville, No Regrets in Liberty Village, the Fade In Cafe in Upper Beaches, and the Renaissance Cafe in Upper Beaches. I play gigs both as a solo artist and with my drummer as Social Potion.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I think it gives indie artists like me more opportunity to be heard.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes I would, but only if I had creative freedom and the final say on all of my songs.
Band History:
Carmen Toth has been singing and writing songs since she was a little girl. While she performed in choir/vocal groups throughout elementary and high school, she hadn't been able to master any musical instrument. A music career was only a dream for her until her husband gave her a guitar for her 26th birthday, and then a keyboard for her 27th birthday. She learned to play both on her own and through lessons at the Tuneology music school in Toronto. In 2004, Carmen released her first EP: "Potional". Then in 2005, she recorded 13 tracks for her first album "Evermore", which was never "officially" released, although she plays most of the songs live. Today, Carmen plays as part of the duo band Social Potion: Carmen Toth on vocals, guitar and keys and Aaron Jones on drums. In June 2010, they released 3 singles "Come Out And See Me", "Cordelia" and "Stevie" on myspace.com. The songs were recorded at TA2 studios and were engineered and mixed by Steve Gadsden, who also played additional guitar and bass accompaniment. For more info, visit www.socialpotion.ca
