Dj Mole is a one man act based in a bedroom in Bristol, England. Although listed as electronica, the genre is pretty hard to define for the artist as opposed to per song. My musical tastes vary a large amount, i've been known to push out tekno, happy hardcore, drum n bass, chemical beats, funk, trip hop, ballads, industrial, euphoria and have even attempted orchestral composition - This means that although you may like some songs some others may not be quite to your taste and vice versa, so give everything a try before judging ;)

Why this name?
Originally, my name was Dj Wildcardz. This changed one day when I recived a phone call from a friend congratulating me on releasing an album which he had spotted in a virgin megastore. Needless to say, it wasnt me. (The actual artist was Dj Wildcard, but thats too close for comfort) - Dj Mole was a silly name and was chosen for a few reasons. There was this comedy mp3 floating around (I forget the title) which involved a reporter and a microsoft representitive decending into the depths of the planet to find a Mole Man Army debugging internet explorer. They made this droning like noise - in an old tune of mine I used this very weird experimental beat that featured a noise almost spot on, so the song was called The Mole-man Army, that made the name relevant when I eventually switched to it. The second reason is even sillier, but a friend pointed out that because I only released music online I was technically underground. And moles are underground creatures. So Dj Mole it was.
Do you play live?
I don't, wish I could but I doubt I ever will. I simply don't have the skill to think fast enough on a stage and play various instruments. Alot of my music relies on computer timing and programmed effects - I often use a piano roll instead of a keyboard for example.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Mp3's can be a good thing and a bad thing. I have lots, I think they are a good thing. I wouldn't even know half the artists I do (nay, 3 quaters) if I didnt see an mp3 and think "that looks interesting" or my friend passed it on saying "gotta here what I've found!". However, such a brilliant system like this relies very heavilly on the sense of the people using it. If something IS that good and you can afford it, buy it! Most people do, this has seen booms in the record industry and guys who may not of previously even sold an album have had the pay off. I also think the corporate reaction to the situation is disgusting. I don't recall any 12 year old girls arrested for giving their best friend a tape cassette of a new album they bought when I was young. This was infact how music was discovered and did wonders for many artists - this "destroying the industry", though having many correct points, is mostly a big barrel of .... yeah.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Difficult one. My music is for fun, always has been. The most I ever considered was making a website, putting my music up for free and throwing a "donate if you like it" button on. I do wonder that if I ever signed up to a label and suddenly things became serious and professional, maybe I would loose the fun I get out of it. I don't think my music is quite major label material, but you never know. If I ever got an offer like "we wanna throw a few of your tracks on a compilation cd" or something it would definatly be considered. Signing up for a Dj Mole only contract? I cant say, would depend on many situations and factors. Time will tell.
Band History:
I started in... God knows. What year did that first ejay come out? About then. Yup, I said eJay. Needles to say all my first stuff was exceptionally poor and won't make it to this website ;)
After a few years I had pushed ejay beyond its limits (using all my own samples etc) and was introduced to fruity loops. Nice little program, my first step into the world of synths instead of samples.
Later on still came Acid which I tried out, back into the sampling type of style. Though I combined it with fruity, using fruity to make my samples and sequencing etc in Acid. Nice, but expensive -_-
Now, fruity kind of sits a little dusty. I discovered Reason.. I'm still learning more and more about it every time I open it - but the quality differance is astounding, worth EVERY penny.

Your influences?
Gee, the answers to my other questions have been rather long, this would could end up worse if I dont generalise.
I listen to just about anything, and EVERYTHING I hear influences me to some degree. See if I can name the first few artists that come to mind.. Massive Attack, Dj Baby Anne, Groove Armarda, a Tribe Called Quest, GrooveRider, Dj Hixxxy, Bliss Inc and Chemical Brothers
I'm a huge fan of Asian music too, and this influences me in many ways. A few artists, Kick the can crew, Mai-K, Rip Slyme, Ken Hirai (shut up, just dont speak, i know it clashes but i like him :P), Ayumi Hamasaki (same applies ¬¬), Do as Infinity etc. I love it all, and every song I hear even if its a genre I dont do (like guitars or whatever) it changes my style slightly, I pick up a new idea for something.
There are two pretty much unknown influences though, two of my friends who I have to shout out to. Big it up for The Advanced (has a page here) and Digital Asylum (http://www.tosaleke.com/Da/).

Favorite spot?
Erm, havnt really traveled enough to say that yet. But based on what I know, I would say either my bed or this little beach I know down in Cornwall, havnt been there in years though
Equipment used:
My computer is obviously central to my music. Its currently packed with a soundblaster live platinium with a live drive II. Reason is currently the application of choice. I have a Yamaha PSR-GX76 keyboard connected to the midi in. Sound is output through a (now kinda dated but still hella good) Kenwood stereo system with 2 1-foot speakers and my latest edition, two satellites and a phillips subwoofer. Its nice :)
Anything else...?
My music is varied and erratic. Don't decide if you like me as an artist. Decide if you like any particular tunes. I'm far from the best and every day I get a little better, so don't expect top of the range amazing music from me. This is my hobby, one of many, I enjoy what I do. If you enjoy it too, then thats a big plus :)
