Tami Neilson, two-time winner of the New Zealand Tui Award for Best Country Album 2009 and 2010 was raised in Canada, by parents with a closet full of sequined stage costumes and platform shoes.
She grew up in a house where amplifiers and guitar cases were just as much a part of the furniture as chairs and tables, and when most kids are still singing nursery rhymes in the bathtub, she was traveling across North America in a 34 foot motor home, performing professionally in her family band, The Neilsons.
Sharing the stage with the likes of Johnny Cash, Tami appeared regularly on television and radio, and at fairs and festivals, promoting The Neilsons independent CD, releasing 2 top 40 singles on the Canadian music charts. She also managed to score an award-winning music video for their single "Windows to The Past", which aired regularly on CMT.
Then Tami met a boy who caused her heart to flutter and her feet to move to the other side of the world.
She arrived in New Zealand, showcasing as the support act on numerous NZ tours, performing on television and radio and releasing her debut solo album, Red Dirt Angel, which included the single Sister Cash, a duet with Joanne Cash. Her most recent release, "The Kitchen Table Sessions" won Best Country Album 2010, making her the first person to win the award two years in a row. The first single, "Cry Myself to Sleep", was also nominated for APRA "Best Country Song". this highly prolific artist is now releasing Volume 2 of The Kitchen Table Sessions in 2011.
Buzzing with raw energy and talent, her music is a hybrid of acoustic torch and stripped-bare alt-country. From haunting ballads of heartbreak and irony to foot-stomping, hand-clapping, harmony-infused numbers, her live performance is one to be remembered.
Truly top shelf.Tami Neilson has the looks and the voice to get any song across to any audience -Randy Bachman of The Guess Who
alarmingly good.. Graham Reid, Elsewhere
Have you performed in front of an audience?
There are so many elements to being a singer/songwriter- writing, recording, eating in the car on tour without spilling stuff...but, playing live is where I am happiest. Growing up onstage with a mic in my hand has made me an insufferable diva who needs an audience...*tosses feather boa over shoulder* I just love that automatic connection and intimacy that comes with performing live- and, frankly, I just love singing my guts out.
What equipment do you use?
Gibson J50 Deluxe acoustic guitar, Takamine Santa Fe small body acoustic guitar, Wazinator stomp board, Hohner Blues Harmonicas.
Anything else?
"Neilson out-writes and out-sings most other country acts these days."

"...good old fashioned, Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, Kris Kristofferson, Shooting-Men-In-Reno-Just-To-Watch-Them-Die country music."

"Neilson sings her heart out, recalling a cross between Roy Orbison and Patsy Cline..."
