Kerry Chicoine (aka kErrY kOMpOsT) has been playing and writing music since early childhood (the womb, actually; he remembers banging his mom’s ovaries against her fallopian tubes and establishing rhythmic patterns against her heartbeat). Later, Kerry’s older sister turned him on to Led Zepplin, Alice Cooper and ELP. Kerry went on to play drums, bass, guitar and keyboards and started recording his own compositions in the early 1980’s. He also played various instruments in various rock bands throughout the 80’s, all of which are delightfully unknown.

“Kompost” is Kerry’s solo recording project. Kerry strives to create the “melodic equivalent of the atomic bomb, perpetually dropping”. Kompost incorporates melodic influences ranging from progressive rock to power pop. Some acts who have had a major influence on Kerry are XTC, Mike Keneally, Todd Rundgren, The Gladhands, and Jason Falkner. "My goal is to confuse the average music listener, and to inspire other musicians as I have been inspired by others before me", says Kerry.

In addition to Kompost, Kerry plays lead guitar in legendary Silver Lake ska-punk-poppers The Abe Lincoln Story (www.abelincolnstory.com). Kerry also recently signed on (bass and vocals) as an equal partner in Los Angeles-area pop supergroup The Ultra Suede. Kerry also plays keyboards in Nipper and the Seaturtles featuring Nipper Seaturtle (aka Gwynne Kahn, formerly of The Negro Problem, Bean, and the Pandoras, among others). Kerry also co-founded, co-wrote songs, played bass, keyboards and sang backing vocals for LA pop band Receiver (www.receiveronline.com), who released a critically-lauded album "Inspiration Overload" on NotLame Recordings (www.notlame.com). In addition to lending his bass playing talents to Cloud Eleven (aka Jiffipop), and keyboard stylings to former LA pop scene faves The Dons, Kerry continually seeks out sessions and quick-notice gigs for artists needing guitar (lead and rhythm), bass and keyboard work.

Kerry is also an active member of several music-related online communities, and often composes free-lance reviews of music that catches his fancy (read his reviews at www.newspapertaxi.net). Email Kerry at Kerry_Kompost@yahoo.com for more info, or if you'd like to exchange nude pictures of queen termites.

Why this name?
Compost: a mixture that consists largely of decayed organic matter and is used for fertilizing and conditioning land. I can live with that, why can't you?
Do you play live?
Occasional gigs -- solo or with various bands -- in and around Greg Lake, I mean, Los Angeles. Next gig: December 15th 2004 (10:00PM), with The Abe Lincoln Story, King King, Hollywood, California, United States, North America, Earth, Our Solar System, The Universe. Did you know that in some parts of North Korea, dog feces are considered a delicacy? Neither did I.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
More weird, off-radar music is available now than ever before; I've discovered (and purchased) more music over the last 6 years than in my entire pre-internet life (did you read that, music industry?). The 'net also makes it nice and easy to have your own site, a place where you can make your own music available to an uncaring, emotionless world. I mean, I can actually make my songs available and virtually ANYONE, ANYWHERE on the planet can choose not to listen to them. What more could a well-hung boy ask for?
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Depends on the contract. Never say never, but don't get ripped off, either. Remember: WE are the talent, NOT the A&R scouts, not the suits, not the powerlosers. We, the creative musicians, with the endless imaginations and boundless joy for our art, yes, we are the industry. None of these asshole label people know a goddamned thing, and they know it. Follow your ears and your heart, and don't let 'em sell you shit. Let ME sell you shit, instead. Good, 100% American indie shit. Thank you, Mavis.
Band History:
There is no band. There never has been a band. It's just me, musically wacking off, for you. My band is whoever I can get to play with me at the time. I usually just fly solo, because my songs don't really follow the standard rules of songwriting, yet they still work, somehow (I like crossing bar lines and slurring tempos). Public coughing is considered impolite in some rural areas of Thailand, did you know that?
Your influences?
XTC, Mike Keneally, Todd Rundgren, Dream Theater, Jason Falkner, Steely Dan, Neal Morse, Greg Howe/Richie Kotzen, Jason Falkner (a different one), Rhoda, Mary Tyler Moore, Robbie Rist. Ed Asner.
Favorite spot?
My girlfriend's p*ssy, closely followed by the general Los Angeles area, California. That sounds weird, doesn't it? Good. I like weird.
Equipment used:
I play real guitar (lead and rhythm), real bass, real drums and real keyboards. I play fake harmonica, fake triangle, and fake orgasm. Did you know that in New Zealand, ejaculating in public is considered distasteful?
Anything else...?
Some nudity, adult content. No tired melodies here, folks, move along. If you want predictible music, with predicitible chord changes and cliched lyrics, you won't find 'em here. If you're looking for yet another garage-y White Strokes flava of the week band, forget about me. Really, it's cool. I need to go lie down now.
