Harmstation began in 2002 as a side project of founder Ridley McIntyre's darkwave group Darkmonki, formed to create a soundtrack for the forthcoming computer game, Rain City. 30 tracks later, it has become Ridley's primary project for the time being. Merging sci-fi soundscapes with techno and breakbeats, Harmstation has been described as "Vangelis meets Altern-8".
Why this name?
Initially we were simply going to be called HARM, from the name of a US air-to-ground missile. Unfortunately, there's a rap artist already under that name, so we chose Harmstation, as it can mean either a place where Harm begins, where people go to find Harm, or where Harm ends.
Do you play live?
No. Harmstation is currently a studio project only.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet, and the mp3, has allowed anyone with a modem access to a worldwide audience. Of course, getting that audience to listen to you is still a battle to be won...
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Not a major label. I honestly don't think a major would be interested, save for soundtack work. I would be happy to work with an independent label, though.
