Why this name?
A friend compared my singing style to that of Billie Holiday, and my favorite flower is the gardenia (she was known for wearing the flower in her hair). Also, during my 1 semester in college, I spent more time illegaly picking the gardenias and feeding squirrels in the courtyard, than attending classes. Thus, the name seemed fitting and it stuck.
Do you play live?
Not currently.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It allows artists like myself to express their creativity and share their vision with countless listeners. It's wonderful.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Definitely.
Band History:
Lisa has performed in numerous artist
showcases and talent shows including: Hawaii Stars in Honolulu, Hawaii; X-Posure Productions
Artist Showcase in Bowie, Maryland; and Café Colonial in Sacramento, California.
Raised on the sweet sounds of Al Green, Marvin Gaye, and The Staple Singers, Lisa says she
immediately fell in love with Mavis Staple’s voice. “It was like finding myself. Even though I was a young girl, her voice seemed to reflect how I felt deep inside, “ she says. Lisa's
versatile vocal styling is rooted in the church, where she began singing at age five. She says,
“ When our choir sang traditional hymns, I would always strive to change the sound and delivery of the song, to make it sound like it had never sounded before….I always wanted to put my own ‘stamp’ on it. “
And Lisa's “ stamp “ is what makes her so captivating. When she sings, she takes you on a musical journey….through her lush R&B grooves, around her graceful jazz phrasings, and finally into her world of sound that will totally envelop and fulfill your entire being.
