Sluice is to date a one-man recording project from Portland, Maine. I record all vocals and guitars by microphone, while other intstruments are "synthetic." The reason I began this project was to at last have a chance to record a lot of the sound I had always envisioned, but could not find musicians to materialize. This project is, I hope, a stepping stone to assembling a another group for live perormance and recording. It is also an opportunity to learn a great deal about mixing and mastering and various other aspects of creating music.
Why this name?
Without trying to sound "mystifying," a sluice is like a channel or stream- and that's what I try to do. Stream or channel the music accurately from the heart and mind to the ears.
Do you play live?
While some of these songs have origins in live bands I've written and performed with, I am currently in recording and production mode.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It's a double-edged sword. On the one side it gives artists and listeners the chance to communicate in countless forms in an extremely fast and convenient way and. An artist now has seemingly unlimited means to reach listeners that he/she may never have reached before. On the other side, without pretending to be a lawyer, the legal concerns have become quite overwhelming.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Probably.
Your influences?
I've always been influenced by music that seems to have been written without audience consideration, as if it didn't matter who was listening. Some things I've done have been likened to Artists such as Pink Floyd, Tool, Tori Amos, Dave Mathews, Tom Waits, Alice In Chains, Jethro Tull, and I'm sure many more will be added as I write more. While my recordings have a similar "sound quality" they vary tremendously in style and feeling.
Favorite spot?
Anywhere I can take a guitar.
Equipment used:
Guitars: Gibson Les Paul, Paul Reed Smith, Guild acoustic. Keys: Korg Triton Pro.
