King Duke is made up of Derekh Froude and Benjamin Turner (or J-Amp and Tenjam...respectively). They met while going to college at The University of Arizona. After both of them graduated in May of 2003 (Derekh with degrees in Media Arts and Creative writing and Ben with a degree in Media Arts) the boys moved to New York City to pursue some sort of career(s). They now live in different parts of Brooklyn and occasionaly write genius acoustic pop songs.
Why this name?
During an Instant Messege Conversation Derekh suggested that the duo form a side project to the Rock band that both of the boys were playing in at the time (this would be the much heralded rock machine "Marscovetra" ...a sordid history..and a story for another time). When the subject of the side project's title came up, it was suggested to be called "The King and The Duke"...After a little bit of editing the boys had paired things down to simply "King Duke" ...the rest was history.
Do you play live?
Occasionally King Duke will play a show/practice session at the Prospect Park subway stop in Park Slope Brooklyn on the F train.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet changes the music industry in such a way that more music can be available to more people more often.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
King Duke would sign a record contract if it allowed them to record one record every 10 years.
Band History:
The History of King Duke is taught in most college level Western Civilization courses. The band would encourage anyone interested in learning more to take one of these courses at their local community college. You may also find Roy Wageman's book "A People's History of King Duke" to be a helpful resource in your quest for knowledge about this band's truly unique path.
Your influences?
Influences include: The Mountain Goats, They Might Be Giants, and maybe a little Creedence.
Favorite spot?
Derekh likes an area at the foot of and directly to the left of the couch. Ben Prefers to sit on a Pilate Ball most of the time.
Equipment used:
Derekh plays an Indiana acoustic guitar and occasionally accompanies it with a Horner Harmonica. Ben plays a Yamaha acoustic guitar.
Anything else...?
We're great!
