My name is Karl Hainer and I am an experimental electronic pop/rock solo artist.
I am also the lead singer with the band Cinemage.
I am currently shape-shifting with The Concrete Trees.

Why this name?
If one were to analyze and weigh up the pro's and cons of calling a band Japan, I guess that calling a band Cinemage displays a similar culturally romantic notion.
Do you play live?
I have to admit that I don't like performing live, however I do perform when I have to and somewhat surprisingly I make a good fist of it.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The balance between access and fairness to the artists hasn't quite been reached to date, however breaking down barriers is ultimately a good thing.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Once upon a time I would have settled for nothing less. I would dearly like to never have to concern myself with writing commercially viable material, however I do specialize in single song writing and I am surprised and a little disappointed that I haven't had a chart hit to date. I will add that the constraints a pop single places on an artist/songwriter rather than being a straight jacket, well I actually find the process cathartic.
Band History:
Interference - Disintegrate - Cinemage (Present) - Solo (present).
Your influences?
David Sylvian, Martin Gore, Neu, Air, Bowie/Eno, Peter Gabriel, Portishead, Scott Walker, Talk Talk, 78-81 Ultravox, Early Black, The The, Can, Early Human League, Goldfrapp, Gorillaz and the films of David Lynch, Lars Von Trier, Chris Nolan, Duncan Jones, Wim Wenders & Tomas Alfredson. The art of Rothko, Kline, Warhol, Bacon & Picasso.
I'm not sure why but for a long time now I have felt like a new European citizen, so I feel obliged to add the names of Joseph Beuys & Conny Plank.

Anything else...?
Always judge a book by its cover, 'cos after all what you see is what you get and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
