Believe Me

This is the 1974-75 version of the band in a 4-track studio in Napa. The tune is reflective of many of the band's influences.
This band's lifespan ranged or existed, in SOME form or other, from 1973 through 1978. They played classic rock/pop covers and originals at local school dances, concerts - even opening for The Tubes in October of 1974!
Band/artist history
1973 - Joe Kellebrew invited Jeff Blumer to a band practice in a garage in Napa. They were playing some Santana tunes, which Jeff was somewhat familiar with. Joe asked Jeff (then age 16) to sit in on "Black Magic Woman", which Jeff could not only play note-for-note, but could emulate the tone nearly perfectly on his red mahogany Gibson SG. After finishing the song - drummer Jim Lang stood up and shouted to the entire band "Dan out - Jeff in!". Jeff being rather embarrased, but at the same time flattered, insisted that Dan Selby NOT be kicked out of the band, that he was a good rhythm player (he also had good equipment!). Joe, along with Bassist Don Carillo, and conga/timbale player Jim Moore agreed. It soon became clear that Jeff was a leader in the musical area. Other members didn't care for Jeff's "management style". He was hyper-focused, and driven (to a fault) to perfection (does a-n-a-l describe more clearly?). Jeff asked his brother John to play bass. Then percussionist Jim Moore was replaced with drummer/percussionist Jeff Gahart. Soon, it was time to add kyboards, to get that FULL Santana-esque sound, with Sam Neft on a Farfisa or Hammond M-3. It was the Allman Brothers' and Doobie Brothers' duelling/twin drummers that got us thinking "dual", and we added a second drum kit (Jeff Gahart played it alternately in sets, playing congas and timbales when not playing his Ludwig jazz kit). Soon, Jim asked Greg Nagy to sit in on Fender Rhodes (he added a MicroMoog synth a short time later). Dan Selby soon developed numerous scheduling conflicts - mostly with involvement at his church - that eventually angered Jeff enough to kick Dan out. Enter Cornay Van Winden - an astounding jazz-rock guitarist and composer! Jeff and Cornay would write collaboratively several jazz-rock tunes, and the unit remained at 7 members for a good 2 1/2 years. Eventually, differing musical interests blurred the group's focused vision, and Jeff (again) asked Jim and Sam to leave. It seems they not only usurped Jeff's status as band-leader, but, according to Jeff, the two were found to be the least musically adept. Even so, no immediate replacements were made this time. Cornay, being faithful to Jim (and becoming less reliable) decided to leave the band. It was a mutually acceptable move. Doug Cox, a great guitar player with a cherry sunburst Les Paul Deluxe, started hanging around at rehearsals, and soon was asked to join Elixer. Greg Nagy naturally left to follow Cornay, and he was soon replaced with Charlie Campbell - and then finally (when Charlie went off to College), Mauritz Coppenrath replaced - and sometimes BOTH Greg and Mauritz would gig with them. They were incredibly gifted musicians, and made quite an awesome duo!
