Empty Buildings, Naked Cranes, And The Wind - Sun Dec 06, 2015 : ( bonus track - not in the charts ) Last one in a series of fieldrecordings done in the 80's across the ( then mainly deserted ) harbors of Amsterdam. A sense of loss, desolation and Nature simply unfolding after the leaving of men. HEADPHONES RECOMMENDED !
Johannes Breeuwsma aka Zu Dir - May 2013
In the year 1984, carrying with me an old and borrowed Uher 4400, I spent several lonely nights in the Western and Eastern Amsterdam harbors to do... fieldrecordings... Scattered around me lay ruins - ruins of once thriving harbors, ruins of once thriving factories, ruins of trains (!), ruins of cranes, ruins overall. There was the distant smell of the past, the reality of the present - and in the architect's drawing a glimpse of the ( nearby ) future.
I recorded the ( heartbreaking and unnerving ) silence, the ( soft ) breeze, the wind across lonely fences, the highway in the distance, the (freight)trains across the ( western ) bridge, the ( sometimes pounding ) rain, and every ( crackling, squeaking, rattling and beeping ) sound which came along - and they slowly gathered around me, as if we were long lost friends.
Now ( 2013 ) they are back once again - originally ( of course ) recorded analogue, now carefully ( !! and - mind you - heavily edited !! ) digitalized as stand alone fieldrecordings, in fact as standalone art. Mainly they have one thing in common : no homo sapiens involved ( except for the fool on the hill and his 'recording device' ).
At that time I didn't have the faintest idea of what was exactly happening - I just felt extremely lonely and more than ever restless. Now ( 2013 ) I know I was in a period of transition, from living the life of just another 'ok! I feel good!' regular guy to the highly uncertain future of artistry. It wasn't untill the mid 90's that I settled down for just a little bit. Overall the tapes here ( a dozen or so ) reflect a sense of loss and 'put up' eternal nature against the fleeting existence of men. Don't expect too much - it has been a long time. On the other hand: exquisite?
My current ( and past ) art -
Gunnthrain - ( Dark ) ambientesque otherwordly surreal experimental atmospheric psychedelic post-rocky and / or neo-folky aural experiences. Gunnthrain's influences range from Joy Division to Biosphere, from Velvet Underground to Cocteau Twins, from Nick Cave to Brian Eno, from Underworld to Mathias Grassow, from Erik Satie to Thomas Köner, from Harold Budd to Pink Floyd, and all over again.
Ecce Homo Pietoso - Ecce Homo Pietoso disintegrates then rebuilds ( most of the time ) human voice material only and is greatly inspired by the work of the Anglo-Irish painter Francis Bacon ( 1909-1992 ). His art is famous for its often bold, grotesque and nightmarish imagery. May I add: compassion...? Compassion for humanity...?
He Who Speaks In Silence - When I was a young kid I used to sit a lot at the side of the road in front of our farm - silence can be really overwhelming.
Seelenruhe - Coming down from an atmosphere drenched in wind, rain and solitude.
The Johannes Breeuwsma Museum - A few acoustic pictures taken from a troubled life, and more.
Peace ( and hugs for the ladies ) - Johannes aka Zu Dir
