My name is Mike Puke, and I first started playing the guitar in 1988, at age 23, and formed a band called Dead Centre, which was to last for ten years. During that time I also played in two other bands, Dratsabeciloptihs, and Boris, neither which was to last for very long. In 1997, I started recording my own songs, and have now recorded three albums, "Puke It's Adipocere, Xarg And Jenny's Revolting peasants", "The Sound Of Puke" and "The Nightmayor Of Nelson". In 2001, I moved to Dunedin, and formed The Pukes, a band which plays live versions of my recorded songs. I also perform songs solo, with a drum machine.
Why this name?
I hate my real name. Like most real names, they're lame.
Do you play live?
I play live with my band, though I'll also play live, solo, with a drum machine, if need be. I usually play at The Crown, a local pub, which is always fun.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I think it's great, free exposure, free music, and you can discover lots of bands.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Maybe, but I don't see any of them wanting me.
Band History:
I first started playing guitar, and formed a band, called Dead Centre, in 1988, which lasted for ten years. In 1997, I started recording my own songs, as I was writing more songs than the band could ever play.
Your influences?
I grew up on 70's and 80's punk. I like bands such as Sex Pistols, 999, Dead Kennedys, G.B.H, Discharge, Subhumans, Bad Brains, Conflict, Crass, etc etc etc. Basically, I like most punk rock.
Favorite spot?
Head, but I will smoke oil if that's all there is.
Anything else...?
Be yourself, and live how you think is right for you.
