I'm now working solo after many many years in bands.
Why this name?
I was lying im my mothers arms beside a basin full of water. I was sleeping. Suddenly I was wakened by the shock of freezing cold water being poured on my head. I heard a voice saying " I baptise this child Ron Lindsay" The name has stuck with me since.
Do you play live?
Just retired from band work. It became boring playing clubs and functions. Doing solo acoustic gigs now which I like much better and also working hard on my own material.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It's too early to say too much. It definitely offers an immediate platform for thousands of musicians and writers like myself who would otherwise never have an opportunity to be heard. It is also forcing the fat cats and controllers of the music industry to accept the inevitable. The industry is changing. It's a much more open market and the potential for spreading wealth is increasing all the time. I do have some doubts as well though. While on one hand we have many platforms, more opportunities for many people to taste success of some kind there has to be an optimum number of sites. The internet could become saturated with sites such as Sound Click. How will they be regulated. They can't all have contacts with producers, labels, publishers etc surfing their sites. Market forces may decide in the end - reputation will be based on credibility and what is considered to be a good deal by the artists and listeners. Hopefully any sites which are questionable will disappear quickly into cyber space.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Of course I would. I'm much older and wiser now and would make sure that it was a deal that suited me. Just finished recording an album in Los Angeles and now looking for a label/distribution deal.
Band History:
Retired from bands on 31 December 2003. Started in the 70's playing on the folk scene in London. Came back to Dundee and continued playing contemporary folk/country crossover with a band called Jude for a few years. Then took a job playing bass in a club band which did covers. Many bands, trios and duos and years later I had to get out of that scene. I had been desperate to get back to do what I do best which is writing, producing and performing music I like - and pubs, clubs and functions are the last places which would appreciate what I like !
Your influences?
I love creating my songs from an acoustic guitar backdrop with emphasis on good vocals, melody and lyrics which say something. Arrangement and production are also important to me. Through the years I've been influenced by singer/writers such as Gerry Rafferty, James Taylor, Jackson Browne and Dan Fogelberg. Down the years it started with bands like Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Orleans and The Eagles. In more recent times Crowded House, Counting Crows, Steve Earle and Tom Petty are right up at the top of my list.
Favorite spot?
Never thought about this before. I think I would say Barcelona which I find to be an amazing place.
Equipment used:
For anyone that is intersted. I use a Yamaha Compass Series Acoustic Guitar, California (Red)Series Strat, Technics Keyboard and Fostex VF08 digital recorder. Just ordered Logic sofware, new soundcard, effects unit etc to begin the learning curve of PC composing.
Anything else...?
My album Americelt Union will be released Wednesday 4 May 2005. It was produced by John Wooler, 26 grammy nominations and 5 time winner The project features classic tracks written by top singer songwriters such as John Martyn, Roy Orbison, Van Morrison, Rod Stewart and Nick Drake plus a couple of of my own.
I had great players on the album including David Immergluck of Counting Crowes, Steve Hodges from Tom Waits Band. Also had Eric Rigler who did all the pipe playing for Braveheart on a few tracks.
