We are the Kaos Theory

The new breed of Alternative Nu/Rap Metal

Rhys Murphy (Vox)
Ryan Salter (Drums)
Steve Smylie (Guitar)
Tony Salter (Bass)
Why this name?
We were just in practise one day and our old bassist came out with it, We were all still in collage back then so he must have pulled it out of a text book
Do you play live?
We’ve been playing live in quite a few venues since January 2001 all over Wales and yeah its great, we have had two bad sets both @ Ott’s due to there failing P.A system but we enjoyed even those. The best times was when we played a gig in Tj’s in Newport S.wales, One of our friends had got really drunk and thought it would be funny to try and put us off., the crowd was into our set and ignoring him so he throw a can at me, missing and hitting our drummer, anyway we were half way through or track Turning and there’s a 20 second gap with no guitar, Our mate reached for another can and as he threw it Steve (Our guitarist) dropped his guitar and dived head first down from the stage onto him. We just carried on playing, the crowd loved it.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Everything’s different, the internet has changed everything but nothing else comes close to the impact it’s had on music. From what I see unsigned bands can triple there exposure and get in contact with venues and labels all over the world, but those labels can’t make money and so there bands are getting less. Don’t know where that will take us, but hey I’ll see you there
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Hell Yeah, I’d bite your hand off if your offering, For most of us on this site music is our life, Its inside us, without it we become nothing but a grey smudge like the rest of the population stamping licence plates or assembling toy cars on the production line. That’s my nightmare, this worlds hell when your broke so why shouldn’t we get paid for our work.
Band History:
The Kaos Theory Started in 2001 so that a bunch of teenager's gained the right to say they were in a band, Formed by the odd mix of a Stoner, a punker, a Goth and a Jock our music melded surprisingly well. We soon developed past the ears of our friends to reach larger paying audiences in all the alternative venues in town (and a few outside of Newport too) But we still remained a very local band and never really strayed outside of Wales. We started putting on shows offering support slots to other groups in the area and soon had become part of a network of young bands, but due to other commitments we had to slow it down through 2003, now were up and running again and with a new bassist who has brought a fifth element to our tracks, check us out soon.
Your influences?
I cant speak for the others but I wouldn’t say I’m influenced by any one band, but subconsciously i guess whatever I’m into or even listening to at the time has a huge effect on what I write, I suppose that’s just natural. Recently Nigel Harding of XFM Radio compared our track 2What I Deserve” very closely to Rage against the Machine, and he’s not the first to say it. We’ve also been compared to the likes of Korn, Limp Bizkit, The Deftones and Incubus. How bout you decide for your self.
Favorite spot?
On Earth? I holidayed in Bermuda once and man that place is paradise, There’s only too towns though on the whole island so I guess if I lived there I’d have to give up music or spend all my time on the road wishing I was home. Ah well, The Stage is a close second though, It’s where you just let it out, you don’t have to watch your words, you don’t have to mind your manners, you don’t share it with 8.somthing billion people. It’s where you can be yourself and not a clone.
Equipment used:
Well we were tanked up, Our exbassist had a B.c Rich Warlock, but to be honest i dont know what the others or the new guys got. ... A seven string guitar, a Double Kick, an £80 Mic and one bad ass set of lungs. Thats what we use
Anything else...?
