I saw this interview at musiqtone.com and applied the questions to myself. Enjoy.
Was music something you’ve always wanted to do and what was your first memory performing?
Music didn’t really hit me until college. Growing up I wanted to be a garbage man (long story, don’t ask). Then I wanted to be a Computer Programmer (Nerd!) and when I got to highschool I found my calling in Cinematography. Some where in those college years I picked up a guitar at a going out of business sale and have been teaching myself to play for the last couple of years. Now I don’t know where I would be without my guitar.
Who are the influences in your music and in your own career?
I’m influenced by so many people and so many genres that it’s hard to keep up. Jack Johnson is a big influence as well as Jason Mraz. Those guys have a way of putting together a feel good guitar lick and some words that make you think, if you pay attention. Turning my thoughts into lyrics is the hard part for me right now. These guys lay it down the way my songs sound in my head. Sometimes I just can’t get them out right though.
There's a lot of musicians who have different philosophy's on music: what is your philosophy on music?
For me music is inspiration. No matter what type of mood you find yourself in, there is a song to fit it. So if you’re in a good mood, there is a song that will pump you up even more and if you’re in a bad mood there’s a song that will help you figure it all out or just take you even lower so you can figure it out yourself.
Why is music important to you?
For the exact reasons above, I find the answers to all lifes problems in music. Music keeps me sane.
In short term and long term aspects, what are your goals?
I just wanna make people smile with my music. I want to get out, play a couple shows a week, hand out some EP’s and watch people enjoying listening to my music. That’s honestly all I want. That and to pull up to a stoplight one day and hear someone playing my cd in the car next to me. That would rule.
If it weren't for music, what are other things you would be doing?
Well I majored in Television Production. So I’d be somewhere holding a camera and producing documentaries for a production company. Actually I still want to do that.
What are you listening to in your CD player right now?
I just bought a in dash MP3 player so I can stuff all my music onto a couple cd’s. Right now there is Jason Mraz (Live at Java Joes), Duncan Sheik, Theory of a Deadman, Tantric, Jay Legaspi, Black Crowes, Silvertide, Jarrett Clayman. That’s all I can remember off the top of my head.
Which venue would you absolutely love to perform in?
I’m happy in a little coffee house with about 20-30 people. Just enough people to not freak me out and just enough people where a few of them might just like my music. Ha.
Everybody has this.. what is something you listen to that your friends/family wouldn't expect you to listen to?
Christian music. Nobody would ever guess I listen to that sometimes. Not for the words, but Christian music has some great guitar in some songs. There is a lot of acoustic in there.
Are there any non-musical talents you carry?
I don’t really have a specialized talent. I don’t really excel in any one thing, but I am pretty average in almost everything. I do everything just good enough to not suck. It’s quite annoying really. I wish I could juggle.
What's your favorite food?
Tacos. Home made tacos. Hands down. And Peach Cobbler. Home made Peach Cobbler.
On stage, what was one of your most embarrassing moments?
Totally blanked on the bridge of one song. Couldn’t even play through it. It blew my mind when I forgot the words and my entire brain just shut down. I believe the only thing that came out was, “……shit I forgot the words…..no really I can’t remember them at all…”. But then we all had a quick laugh and I picked up like nothing happened.
What are some of your guilty pleasures?
Love. Gets me everytime.
How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard you before?
Just some laid back, acousctic pop, wuss rock.
Are there any other instruments that you can play besides guitar?
I started on the drums but haven’t played in years. I can still keep some basic rhythm. I’m trying to teach myself the piano but it’s an even slower process than the guitar was!
