lemur is the duality between the abstract humanistic and the guttoral animalistic mind - lemur is pure emotional expression straight from the core - lemur is the penumbra; the grey area between the light and the dark - lemur is an experiment in neo-tribalism, archaism, and modern savagery - lemur is about uninhibited artisitic expression through all known senses - lemur is a way of thought inspired by Buddhist/Taoist insight and Pagan/Native beliefs, as well as the writings of naturalistic and extistential philosophers - lemur is about community, sanctuary, brotherhood, and freedom of expression and speech - lemur is the acceptance of all in the pursuit of creation, growth, and understanding.
Why this name?
The lemur animal was chosen to represent the duality of the mind. Lemurs are closely related to higher primates, but, of course, still function on the behavioral traits that run the entire animal kingdom. So, in great simplicity, they represent both the humanistic and animalistic subsects of the mind. On a less profound note, the lemur is used as a symbol of that which is misunderstood, and ultimately, marred by the world around it. This metaphor is based in the superstition of early European travelers, who first explored the island of Madagascar and encountered these strange creatures (this is evident in the name lemur, which, roughly translated, means 'the shadows' or 'the dark ones'). lemur's consistant use of only monochromatic art and presentation is in celebration of this spirit animal.
Do you play live?
Touring and live performances are not lemur's artistic priority. Performances are done only on special occassion and done when circumstances allow for a truly tribal/community based experience.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It allows an artist the ability to reach people no matter how radical, freakish, or unpopular their music might be to the general music consumer.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Not likely. Only under my specific terms, which no label would likely agree with.
Band History:
lemur has been around, in one form or another, since 1997 (at which time it went by the tenative name of Pantheon). Brian Hart is the central figure of this creative maelstrom, often collaborating with other artists to create in the name of lemur. May 5th, 2002, marked the release of lemur's first album 'notharctus,' under their own independant label, RingTail Records. Brian worked with Mitchell Breton on this lemur first. The album has been distributed across the US, and to a lesser extend, internationally. Since that time Brian Hart has been creating solo, occassionally working with a number of other musician's on a variety of side projects. Though his time is consumed mostly with his webcomic Disassemblance, Brian has continuously worked on the exploration that is lemur; publishing solely through the website.
Your influences?
lemur takes great philosophical and artistic inspiration from Nine Inch Nails, Henry Rollins, TooL, SoulFly, Depeche Mode, Botch, Zao, Bjorck and Rage Against the Machine.
Favorite spot?
Any place that provides unique and interesting people.
Equipment used:
My computer, with a few selective software packages. Most sounds used in my creations are actually produced by my very own vocal chords (if not heavily distorted).
