LA Songstress Denise Vasquez recently won a publicity campaign from Audioxposure.com, got a mention for her upcoming release on the "PERFORMING SONGWRITER MAGAZINE" Website, was offered a record deal, was featured on The Power Show, had a live interview on VM Underground Radio, and was named FEATURED ARTIST on imovemusic.com and musicforte.com all before her new album "FRAME OF MIND" was released. With no management, no PR firm, no rep of any kind, Vasquez has done it all herself. MC saluted this artist for showing other artists that they can indeed take control of their career.

Genghis Cohen
Los Angeles
Players: Denise Vasquez (vocals, guitar), Michael Paige (Bass), David Leach (Percussion)
Material: Denise Vasquez takes the standard singer/songwriter formula and adds elements of jazz, classic rock, and a distinctly Latin flavor. This spicy blend succeeds in creating a unique and engaging sound. A songwriter with an ear for melody, Vasquez's songs are straighforward but catchy, and she employs stripped down arrangements that suit her voice well. The inclusion of the 80's hit "We Belong" was somewhat interesting, but unnecessary given the stregnth of her original material.
Musicianship: Vasquez's strong voice is the focal point of her sound and she is decent, if not outstanding guitar player.
Performance: Vasquez exuded warmth and confidence in the small club setting at Genghis Cohen, comfortably interacting with the audience and proving herself to be a natural performer.
Summary: Denise Vasquez is a talented young performer with a handful of good songs in her repertoire. She has the voice to sing them...though Vasquez may be a relatively unknown artist playing small clubs in LA, she has the tools to take her career to the next level.

One might think there is a new trend for actual musical artists to come back to the forefront of the field. Is it possible? Can we get people like Denise Vasquez to replace the dancing MTV product queens? That would be a step in the right direction. This album is a collection of no-frills one-take live recordings that portray Vasquez in a sultry and adventuresome persona that makes you want to come back for more. With her last name, one might expect Denise to perform percussive salsa or other variations on Hispanic musical forms but she's more of a folk and inventive singer/songwriter stylist. The group is simple with acoustic guitar, flute and congas. She has a good message. In one lyric, "We are crayons in the box, different colors but all made the same, for one purpose, to color the picture..." Peace & Joy back at you, Denise.

The Roxy
Los Angeles
Players: Denise Vasquez (vocals, guitar), Todd Wolf (Drums), Rio (Bass), Stevie Blacke (Guitar)
Material: While her overall sound could land her in an alternative-country market, Denise Vasquez isn't afraid to dip into folk-rock and even a bit of reggae. Led by her songwriting talents, Vasquez shows considerable range by delivering soothing blues-based numbers one minute and meditating on spacey, spoken-word intros the next. Lyrically focused on reaping the benefits from the here-and-now, Vasquez's sincerity, along with her well-written melodic hooks, make any preaching a pleasant pill to swallow.
Musicianship: Vasquez moves from gentle, honey-dripped vocals to gritty bar-room swagger-both with assuring command.
Performance: Ending on a bombastic note, Vasquez's unassuming vibe played well with her eclecticism.
Summary: Blending elements of rock, country, and a myriad of other spicings, Denise Vasquez's music possesses an earthy, soothing quality that is engaging.

SWEDEN REVIEW
Kulturochhallandsposten.se
Denise has been described as a cross between Janis Joplin and Jewel. With strong conviction. The stage is a natural place for Denise Vasquez. An awarded singer/songwriter from LA, both her albums "Live In One Take" and "Fighting Darkenss" are mainly recorded live and filled with a raw naked sound. The music in the background is sparse. It's straight through acoustic "Folk-Rock" where Denise accompanies herself on guitar. At the same time, there is a mission in her songs. The debut cd "Fighting Darkness" is focussed on Sept. 11th, 2001 and it's aftermath. Other motives come in on the follow up album "Live In One Take". It has a mix between relations based motives and conversational language, there's also a sense of magic, enhanced by (suggestive) flute. The sound is pretty much timeless, with some echoes of the 60:ies free psychedelic. Vasquez carries a pure scent of independent and you do believe in her words "My music is all that I am"

Denise came all dressed up for the occasion! Long shiny coat, shiny hot pants, cleavage...it was all there...beautiful to look at. Her full band was there and they kicked into some high energy, fun songs. Denise has a unique voice and projection style I've noticed before, but this time I realized even more why people like her so much. She's got stage presence, voice, and songs.

Denise wowed them with her insightful and introspective lyrics and vocals that ranged from deep and seductive to sweetly fluttering often in the same line! The picture of feminine charm, she graciously invited us to accompany her on her life journey. A couple of my personal favorites were the passionate "Time" and "Hope", both of which are on her most recent live cd "Fighting Darkness", recorded in LA just after 9/11 and as a tribute to rescue workers and survivors of the attack. A beautiful example of her heartfelt live performance.

Molly Malones
Los Angeles
Players: Denise Vasquez (Vocals, guitar)
Material: For someone who has only been playing guitar and performing for a year, Denise Vasquez has developed a fairly strong repertoire. Her upbeat and optimistic lyrics are delivered on flowing melodies with a unique voice that has undeniable conviction and feeling.
The song "You" which Vasquez told the audience she wrote because she's "so in love with life", is typical of her romantic fare.
Musicianship: Vasquez possesses an amazingly flexible voice that is as sexy and throaty as Janis Joplin one moment and as playful as a bird the next, not unlike the singer Jewel. Vasquez could trademark the way she accents her high notes with a delicate trill that sounds more like it's being produced by a flute than by human vocal chords.
Vasquez's guitar playing is uncomplicated, but it provides background for her singing, which is where her true talent lies.
Performance: With a sunny demeanor, Vasquez seems extremely comfortable on stage, especially for a new performer. She definitely feels her music and the audience, and gets caught up in the heat of the moment when she throws back her head and belts out her meaningful lyrical narratives.

My music is all that I am!
Why this name?
It chose me
Do you play live?
I play live quite frequently! I love performing in front of a live audience, especially for a cause...Los Angeles, New York City, The US Virgin Islands, Ireland, UK, Europe...at some of the most respected venues including: The Cavern Club, The El Rey Theatre, The Roxy, Genghis Cohen, Molly Malones, The Monsoon Cafe, Borders Bookstores, The Rainbow, Harvelles, Room 5, The Acoustic Playhouse, Westwood Brewing Company, The Joint, Kulaks Woodshed and Caffeinds Lounge...to name a few! In New York City: The Bitter End, The Duplex Cabaret, Room 55. In the Virgin Islands: The Westin Resort, Caneel Bay Resort, Skinny's, The Beach Bar. In Sommerville: The Burren. Most memorable performance to date: performing at the legendary CAVERN CLUB (Home of The Beatles) & being asked to sign the wall during Beatles Week!
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet gives the indie artist exposure to a whole new world...a new audience...a new way of promoting your music worldwide...with or without a label!
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes, if the deal is right!
Band History:
Having grown up between New York City and the Virgin Islands, Denise's voice reflects the stregnth NYC has given her and she proudly incorporates all her experiences as an actress, dancer, violinist, singer and painter into her life as well as her music. As her mother was an artist, Denise was influenced and surrounded by music and art at a very early age. Denise began singing from the time she could speak, dancing from the time she could walk, and writing from the time she could form a sentence. Denise graduated from High School at a very early age, 15! She studied at Hunter College for a couple of years until she found out about a work exchange program where she could live abroad. Denise lived and worked in Scotland, London, Whales...that was the beginning of her journey. Later on, Denise ended up moving to the Virgin Islands during a vacation while considering a move to Los Angeles. It wasn't until she moved to the Virgin Islands that Denise began to utilize all of her skills-writing, singing and performing. Denise was invited to perform at Tillet Gardens Arts Alive Festival for Womens Month which inspired her to Create, Produce, Host, Perform in her "LADIES NIGHT MUSIC FESTIVALS I-VI", developing a following of hundreds, receiving rave reviews from the press (The Daily News, The St. John Times, The Island Trader).
