Band History:
It can be said that one of the most universal forms of artists communicating with an audience is the song. A three-minute series of verses and choruses, bridges and interludes can paint a picture of pain, joy, and everything in between. While the radio and music television project an agenda of style over substance, artists that hold themselves simply to writing great songs become few and far between. The music industry has slowly but steadily become more and more void of the songwriters that communicate more than just an image or just a style of music.

Now we’re in Cary, North Carolina…right in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area.

By the summer of 2003, guitarist/vocalist Mark McKee, born of a very musical family, had been writing songs for a few years. Bits and pieces of lyrics and half-finished melodies evolved into full songs over that time, and at the break-up of a former band Mark was in, he realized that the vision he had of making those songs come alive was about to become real. In steps brother Mike McKee to play drums. Beginning with many studio demos, shows, and a single line-up change, The Motion has hit the NC Triangle music scene full on since May of 2003. The sound could be described as an eclectic blend of alternative, rock, and pop. In March of 2004 Chris Rafetto joined The Motion as bassist/vocalist. Work on a full-length album began in the summer of 2004, and the group found themselves playing every major venue in Raleigh as well as performing all over the state. As a three-piece, the band strives to and does deliver the kind of live show people will remember and want to see again.

The band continues to carry its own weight on many things. Acting as their own producer in the studio (with the help of Mike Lawrence co-producing and engineering), self-financing their full-length record, doing most of their own booking, self-promoting, and other DIY tactics prove to be rewarding on many levels. From radio interviews to headlining clubs, The Motion is finally getting the attention they worked so hard to achieve. Notes frontman Mark, “I’m a firm believer in what goes around comes around. All of us put so much into this band. The more rewards we see from our hard work, the more we want to work harder.” It is this attitude that has propelled the band further into the NC music scene and perked the ears of many new fans.

As the main songwriter for the group, Mark has never relented from the vision he started the group with, simply put: to write great songs. Never allowing themselves to get caught up in clever rock & roll trends that cover up mediocrity, The Motion will keep pushing themselves forward into the music industry.
