Take one shot of clever pop-rock; add a dash of salt, a splash of sass, and a twist of irony. This is the explosive boom*chick, an all-original four-piece band from Denver/Colorado Springs, Colorado. Their distinctive style of assertive, melodic rock and high-energy live performances have sparked interest from the local music scene and beyond.
Why this name?
Greg and Sharon were playing in a county band when the singer was trying to describe the beat to the drummer. "It's a boom chick boom chick thing man." Light bulb goes off
Do you play live?
We play the club circut of the Colorado front range
If you make it big..?
We'll be stoked!
Band History:
Members of boom*chick trace their roots to several groups popular on the Denver and Bay Area scenes in recent years. Local founders Greg Gibb and Sharon Riggs played in the funk-rock Pet the Monster and the folk-rock Somebody’s Sister; later they recruited guitarist Mike Manthei to fuel the rock-rock Wrath of Sharon. The trio clicked, but after losing their longtime drummer to a twentysomething midlife crisis they embarked on a vital quest: to complete their lineup with the right drummer to add sparks to their evolving sound. Enter Amanda Krantz of the imaginatively quirky Bay Area band The Walkin’ Walkers. Facing a relocation to Colorado Springs, she answered Sharon’s ad on the drummergirl.com website and the two quickly knew something big was about to happen. “We had auditioned quite a few drummers, but no one felt right,” explains Sharon. “Then Amanda and I started swapping novel-length E-mails about music, attitude, the biz, everything. She flew out for a weekend to jam with us—to see if this was really it—and there was no question. We were done looking.”
boom*chick rapidly developed its passionate, emotive style. Amanda’s solid yet expressive drumming melds with Sharon’s driving, rhythmic bass. Mike, entirely self-taught brings an unorthodox and unexpected “sonic sculpture” to the mix. His fresh approach complements the “strange genius” of Greg, who although more formally trained, employs many unusual tunings and techniques. Above it all soars Sharon’s distinctive soprano, which has been described as a cross between Gwen Stefani and Blondie’s Deborah Harry.
