Shun started at the age of five performing Southern Gospel music. At the ages of ten through sixteen, Shun had opportunities to sing and play the piano with some of the top Southern Gospel acts in the business, such as the Kingsmen Quartet, Inspirations, McCameys, The Crabb Family and The New Hinsons. Kenny Hinson is still Shun's biggest gospel influence.

In his later teen years, Shun moved into the country scene with musical influences of Hank Williams, Jr., Toby Keith, Merle Haggard, Johnny Paycheck, Waylon Jennings, Kid Rock and David Allen Coe.
