BoomslangGrrl is a femlae-fronted, acoustic-electric, alternative rock band. Karen Davis rocks the acoustic guitar in a stlye reminiscent of Pete Townshend. Her dark, poetic lyrics cover subjects ranging from violent alienation to love gone awry. Karen uses her powerful voice to fill each tune with maximum conviction and emotion. Even the quiter sections crackle with intensity. She wrote and arranged all the tunes on Boomslang's CD Bloody Tales From the Suburbs.
Karen's jack-hammer acoustic guitar style is perfectly complemented by Kevin Hummel's thick melodic bass lines. Her sometimes intricate chord changes and churning rhythms give Kevin plenty room to use his Jack Bruce-influenced bass artistry. Brother John Hummel handles the drums. Don't let his slight build and unassuming demeanor fool you - he's an animal on the kit. His style is both musical and powerful - giving Karen and Kevin solid rhythmic ground to stand on.
So, what do you get when you combine all these elements? You get a modern-alternative heavy singer-songwriter rock band: BoomslangGrrl.

Why this name?
Karen Says: I saw the word in a Stephen King novel. I thought it was one of the coolest words I ever saw. Plus, I liked saying it.
Do you play live?
We love performing, and play live whenever we get the oppoertunity. Karen's constantly booking, drumming up press, or other forms of publicity to get us in front of people. We've played all over NYC and in Jersey. The best gig we had so far was at the Black Potaote Festival in Clinton, NJ. Great crowd, great sound, great stage. Awesome gig all around.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It makes our music available to more people. That can only be a good thing.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Only if we have creative control. I think we're an indie band in our heart of hearts.
Your influences?
Karen' major influence is Pete Townshend's double-time rhythm. You hear it most in Butterfly Kiss, Beautiful Girl and Uninvited. Kevin plays melodic, moving bass lines like Jack Bruce or John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin). John does that toned-down-for-the-acoustic Ginger Baker (Cream) thing.
Favorite spot?
Moran State Park - Orcas Island, Puget Sound, Wahington State
Equipment used:
Kevin uses vintage Gibson basses - The Ripper, The Grabber, and a short scale EB. John plays vintage Vista Lites from 1966. Karen plays a Red Guild acoustic through a Roland Jazz chourus amp.
