play lo-fi play hi-fi  Lesley's Favourite
I'm a singer-songwriter acoustic guitarist. Yes, another one! I have been playing guitar for about 35 years. I decided to learn to play after seeing this guy, sat astride his parked motorcycle, playing guitar to two good-looking girls. They were enraptured. "That's for me!" I thought, and promptly bought a guitar and a motorcycle. The girl thing didn't quite work out, none were enraptured until a long time afterward, but by that time I was bitten by the music bug!
Why this name?
I suppose you could call me a one-man-band. My real christian name is Jeremy, but after leaving home and joining the Army all those years ago, my soldier mates decided to call me "Taff" (I'm Welsh). I objected, so it was agreed I would become "Dai"!
Do you play live?
I have played live gigs many, many times. I won a talent contest in Germany, and haven't looked back since. Unfortunately my current job (in the Aviation industry) precludes me from taking any paying gigs at the moment as I'm on call a lot of the time and can't guarantee being able to turn up to them. This will change in the New Year, hopefully.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The Internet and MP3 have kicked butt in the music industry, and not before time, too. For too long the real heroes of the industry, the musicians, have been taken completely for granted, and very often treated appalingly. Now, with just a very modest outlay, anyone can produce their own music and distribute it via the Internet. Who needs a middleman?
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Only if it was a VERY good deal.
Your influences?
All the great acoustic guitarists, like Martin Simpson, Isaac Guillory, John James, Paco de Lucia, Juan Martin. Plus the great singer-songwriters - James Taylor, Cat Stevens, and top of the tree is Paul Simon, who I had the privilege of meeting a couple of years ago.
Favorite spot?
No contest - Albufeira, Southern Portugal. It's got everything I could possibly want - Sun, Sand, Sea, great musicians, great food, and most importantly of all, great locals, the friendliest on Earth.
Equipment used:
Yamaha AW4416 16-track digital recorder, Alesis M1 Active monitors, AKG C3000 condenser mic, Beyer M300 dynamic mic. Guitars: Martin 000C acoustic-electric, Pilgrim bowl-backed acoustic-electric, and a slim-bodied classical acoustic-electric manufactured in Granada. For backing I have a Generalmusic GEM S3 Turbo keyboard (not used much now). My PA includes a pair of Bose 802 speakers, Yamaha EMP100 sound processor and a Mackie 1202 mixer.
