Why this name?
The first band name VCR(Variety Club Rhythms) was of course a collaboration of many genres of music. Randy Fogelstrom came up with the name AMALA.
Do you play live?
I've played with a few bands. VCR(one of them) opened for Sadhappy, Kid Sensation and Duffy Bishop to name a few. AMALA opened for Jennifer Holiday(Broadway Musical-Dreamgirls), Martha Wash (It's Raining Men/Everybody Dance Now) and performed at Washington Gov. Gary Lockes victory party, now ambassador to China under President Barack Obama. The most recent band I played with was Sandra Hilton Undercover. Of course working with Howard Leese was an honor.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I see it as a great stepping stone. The internet has opened many doors and has given the opportunity for artists and bands to be heard.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Maybe. The music industry has evolved into the internet stage which makes it easier for independant artists to sell their music, etc.
Band History:
In 1986 Larry put together a band called VCR(Variety Club Rhythms) with Marcus Williams and Snoopy(Paul Law) Washington. 1989-90 Larry played keys and was one of the singers for Alpha Centauri under the direction of Alex Roberts and Frank Roberts Sr.
During this time he also did small demos for various artists in Seattle...D' Maurice, Jamie Koppang to name a few. By 1991, VCR had two songs out on two major stations in Seattle. 1992 Larry was briefly in the band Darlene Hudson & Second Nature which developed into Hit Explosion. 1993 Larry produced a demo tape for George Transcender called "Songs For Parents of Missing Children." 1994 Larry met with a professional songwriter in 1992 and by 1994 formed a vocal trio called AMALA. In 1995 Larry produced a demo for D' Maurice for which he was offered a contract with SONY records in France and co-produced AMALAS' first cd "Somethin' Real with Howard Leese former guitarist for HEART) and Randy Fogelstrom. Only 2 songs are available to listen to. On Larry Hurds site is Never Alone(Duet with Sharon Chappelle) and Take My Heart(Featuring Larry Hurd) on the AMALA site on soundclick. 1998-2000 played keys and backing vocals for Sandra Hilton.
