Ornakay is a British band based in Guildford, about 30 miles south of London. They have been together for a number of years writing and performing their own music. Their material is a mixture of rock, indy and ballad and they have been performing around the UK for the last 4 years.
Why this name?
The original name of the band was Lot 31 but we found that another band already had the name. Ornakay is the aboriginal word for rhythm so we went for that.
Do you play live?
We play almost all of our music at live gigs, especially in London and the south of England. We are currently planning a UK University tour for 2004/2005. We enjoy live performances more than anything else and London is a fantastic place with great venues. Our latest CD was real fun to produce at one of the top studios available in the UK.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Hopefully, it gives unsigned bands the opportunity to showcase their talent, something which was previously unavailable.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Of course. Isn't that the ambition of every band?
Band History:
Originally a 3 piece, we approached jim to join Ornakay and that allowed us to improve the Ornakay sound. We have all known each other since we were at school so we get on really well. We practise at least three times a week with one session in a rehearsal studio and the others generally at a band member's home where we tend to stick to accoustic sound and writing the material. We have built up a large following over the last three years and we are grateful to the fans who follow us everywhere we go.
Your influences?
The Ornakay sound really began as Indy but has developed over the years to provide a unique sound. We hope, and it seems, that it is a sound that people of all persuasions tend to enjoy.
Favorite spot?
London. It's a great place to perform and listen to all kinds of music. Mind you, the Algarve is pretty good too and we have been there together to write new material in the sun.
Equipment used:
We have over £30,000 worth of equipment built up over the years. Guitars are mainly Fender and Yamaha, drums are Pearls and a variety of amps and PA systems help us to provide a first class live performance at any venue.
Anything else...?
Nah, just that we love music, we are all self taught and we think we're good enough to go the whole nine yards with the right breaks and the right audience.
