Lovespirals began in 1999 as an outgrowth of Love Spirals Downwards, the dream pop recording project of multi-instrumentalist, Ryan Lum. Lum became immersed in the San Francisco drum 'n' bass DJ scene, and soon found himself collaborating with sultry vocalist, Anji Bee. After a series of jazzy D n B singles released on comps alongside the likes of LTJ Bukem, Lovespirals explored their love of jazz, blues, world, and rock music for their moody 2002 debut CD, Windblown Kiss. The duo followed up in 2005 with a sensual blend of their electronica and rock influences on Free & Easy, the first CD for the band's own label, Chillcuts. Long Way From Home took the band back to their Dream Pop roots in 2007, in a co-release with Chillcuts and San Fran's reapandsow digital label. The band has just released their 4th full-length album, Future Past, which is a career-defining synthesis of the band's vast musical influences into a fresh new electronica sound. This captivating 11 track set contains their strongest songwriting to date, with an attention to detail in recording quality and production that is unmatched in the duo's decade-long history. As the title suggests, Lovespirals have melded the contemporary with the classic; embracing the past, but with an eye towards the future. Why this name?
Lovespirals is a shortened version of the band's original name, Love Spirals Downwards.
Band History:
After nearly a decade of artistic collaboration between singer/songwriter, Anji Bee, and multi-instrumentalist/producer, Ryan Lum, it seems almost a moot point that Lovespirals evolved out of Projekt act, Love Spirals Downwards. Yet Lum's former band incarnation remains popular within dream pop circles; popular enough that his first 2 early 90's albums are were recently reissued in an expanded and remixed digipac format by Projekt. So though Lovespirals have been around as long as LSD, the two projects are inextricably linked in many people's minds.
Still, Lovespirals have gained many new fans, from both their heavy involvement with the digital music revolution and their growing popularity in the podcasting world. Lovespirals were a forerunner of band pocdasting, launching Chillin' with Lovespials in mid-2005. This Mevio syndicated podcast has detailed their work on Long Way From Home, leaking clips of songs in progress, as well as remixes, live recordings, and demos with thousands of listeners monthly. Bee's popular podsafe music podcast, The Chillcast, has won the band additional fans due in no small part to her stature as "the sexiest voice in podcasting."
Lovespirals were one of the first bands to join the Podsafe Music Network, founded by Mevio owner, Adam Curry. The band enjoys strong support not only from Curry's seminal Daily Source Code, but from many other renowned podcasts including Accident Hash, Rumor Girls, Dave's Lounge, and Coverville. The album's first podsafe single, "Motherless Child", was remixed by indie bands including Karmacoda, Hungry Lucy, and MoShang, for a digital EP which is entirely podsafe.
Lovespirals' music has appeared on TV and cable including MTV, VH1, E!, and The Oprah Winfrey Show.
