fornever is an established alternative band specializing in an eclectic mix of alternative rock/pop, new wave, gothic rock, industrial, ethereal and electronic music.
Why this name?
The name fornever dates back to the early days of the project, when a lot of the subject matter in my songs dealt with the idea of nothing being forever and sort of a longing for the permanence that doesn't exist. Even our happiest moments have a hint of sadness in them because we know they will end. Basically, nothing is forever, hence the name fornever.
Do you play live?
Rarely..usually small, intimate performances at odd festivals and things. My most memorable live performance was probably playing "digital phage" at the first undergraduate electronic music concert at the State University of New York at Buffalo, which was a somewhat special event with a different atmosphere than most gigs. Overall, though, I prefer to spend my time in the studio writing and recording new material.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Well, since I started fornever before the whole mp3 thing by sending out demo tapes and trying to get my music out through traditional means...as well as being one of the early artists to sign up to mp3.com in its early days...I observed the change firsthand. It was really the first time independent artists were given the chance to level the playing field, to allow their music to be heard by a worldwide audience. Instead of sending out dozens of tapes hoping to get underground radioplay and reviews in a few magazines, you could record a song and have it available to millions of people the next day, along with a full virtual presskit. Before, avenues of information and the availability of music were very tight. Now, while major label artists still have an advantage over independent artists, things have opened up and independent artists have more of an equal opportunity to promote themselves and be heard.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Probably not, although it depends on the terms, especially with regard to artistic control and control of rights to my own material.
Band History:
Originally formed in 1995 by sole songwriter, vocalist, and core studio musician/producer Joshua Heinrich, fornever's genre-bending, ever-evolving-yet-uniquely-identifiable sound is the product of relentless reinvention. From the moody, stark, 17 Seconds-meets-Pornography-era Cure-esque vibe of 1999's Pale to the acclaimed diverse alt rock of 2005's ghosthouse and the indie rock/shoegazer/dream pop/electro hybrid of the band's upcoming, as-yet-untitled, eleventh album, fornever's sound is a blend of innate pop sensibilities, sonic experimentation, and a penchant for melancholia. Combined with intelligent lyrics, running the gamut from introspection to witty social/political sarcasm, fornever's work has found a home among an ever-growing international fanbase, repeatedly earning critical acclaim as well as literally dozens of high-charting singles on a number of high-profile internet music sites (including numerous stints at the top of mp3.com's coveted genre charts during the site's heyday). Look for two new fornever albums in 2009.
