Abbess is the composer in residence for the Visions creative multimedia collective and church service in York. Last year she added some free downloads of settings of ancient songs used in the mornng prayer liturgy. Plus, with Christmas just around the corner there are some fantastic remixes of Christmas carols to listen to from the album, Bethlehem Bound.

Abbess' music ranges from classically influenced chill-out pieces through trip hop to departures into the land of techno. Feel free to use the mixes and/or words in a non-profit church service situation, and let her know if they liked it!
Why this name?
Abbess was originally the name of our computer. We called her that because she ran the small house network (or cyber-monsastery :-) we rigged up between me, my husband and the lodger. Abbess (the computer) is still going, but she's had a few upgrades since we first named her.
Do you play live?
I play live more or less every week, at Visions. Our multimedia, multi-sensory worship experience.
Yes, I like it! There have been some amazing moments at times, when the VJs (who generally mix on the fly), the DJs and the singers all bounce off each other and create something very special. Those moments are bliss.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It empowers the small people. Suddenly we have a voice, and an audience available to the whole world.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I doubt it. I think it would have too many strings attached and I'm not too fond of strings. But then, well you never know. I could be persuaded... :-)
Your influences?
I'm into ambience, Ibiza style chillout, ethereal strings and vocals, trippy trance. Artists I'm most like would probably be.... Orbital, Moby when he's being ambient, Chicane, Enigma and anything on Ibiza chillout albums.
Favorite spot?
Venice or Florence as dusk is falling.
