With the over abundance of battle MCs, studio thugs and commercial cats, where's the alternative? The self titled "novelist" Xander Grey is just that, providing music that comes from the heart, whether it be the occasional love track, a reflective piece, or a playful piece filled with social satire.
Why this name?
It came from a combination of things. With Alexander being my middle name and Grey coming for the neutrality. If morale was on a scale of black and white, with black being complete and utter darkness and white being purity, I fall somewhere in the middle...in the "Grey Area." It also reflects that not everything is black and white or cut and dry. There's often unexplained things, things that come off "Grey"...therefore I'm a bit of that.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It provides the chance for more artists to be heard, not just those with record deals.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I guess it all depends. I don't make music hoping to make a career out of it. I make music because I enjoy doing so. When money gets involved with things, it tends to ruin it.
Your influences?
I'd say my father. He's been playing gospel and jazz guitar since I can remember and being around that always had me interested in music. On the Hip Hop side, it ranges from people like Mos Def and Talib Kweli to Chino XL and Ras Kass to Copywright and Jakki Da Motamouth to Mobb Deep. There's a wide variety there.
Favorite spot?
Daydreams...imagination.
