Cork based outfit Rest dispense of the notion that music should abide by strict guidelines. Without a vocal what is there to grasp onto? Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus this is not! Atmosphere gives way to dynamics, which in turn swells to breaking point, via jarring white noise and heavy textures, before a final crashing crescendo and then its over. Similar to the foreboding tension of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, the ethereal density of Isis and the urgency of post-punk/mathrock, the resulting sound is an eclectic and continuously evolving undercurrent of melody and noise which looks to envelope the listener. Well nobody ever said it was going to be easy!
Formed in late 1999, Rest's initial musical background was forged in the heavier aspects of rock. Comprising of Steve (Guitar and Vocals), Graham (Guitar), Mark (Bass) and Johnny (drums), Rest were originally known as Wretch. Their music, at the time, was influenced by the likes of American cult rockers Kyuss. As their influences broadened, so did their music and eventually the group decided to drop the vocals and focus entirely on the instrumental aspect of their music. A two track demo‚ began circulating following on from a number of gigs. The two tracks on offer showcased the groups new direction and sold in decent numbers around the Cork area.
The band, now known as Rest, began giging more frequently and in 2002 toured for the first time with French group To Learn‚. This in turn led to the group being offered gigs around the country including a number of support slots (Giddy Motors, The Apes, The Redneck Manifesto, Electric Eel Shock, Jetplane Landing, Oxbow and Explosions in the Sky among others). Rest also joined the Forward the Revolution‚ Tour, which comprised of the best Cork has to offer. Shows with the likes of Fred and Rulers of the Planet in venues such as Whelans proved successful in what was a very positive tour.
During the summer of 2003, Rest relocated to the beaches of Owenahincha to record their debut album in Blue Monkey Studios. This was followed by some additional recording, where Rest were joined by a number of friends and fellow musicians. Annette Buckley, the talented Cork vocalist, joined the group for a number of tracks. The album was also bolstered by the addition of a string quartet. During the intervening months, the band continued to gig around the country, including their split Christmas recording with Out On A Limb label mates Giveamanakick on which the band covered Walking in the Air (The Snowman), as well as releasing a track from the forthcoming album. They also contributed a track to the Freakscene 10 year anniversary compilation CD, Cork is an Anagram of Rock.
Rest's debut album "Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame", the latest release on Cork/Limerick based independent label Out On A Limb Records, is now available from all good record stores.
