Thanks for flying with us! Here's the scoop. Willie Cleer and Rick Munarriz formed the band fresh out of high school. They were signed to Columbia Records just two years later, with Haydee Rivera singing lead. "Voices in Your Head" was released in July, 1989. It peaked at #14 on the Billboard Dance Chart. In March of 1990 "C'mon & Dance With Me" topped off at #35. Later that year "It's Another Holiday" began the first of its seasonal airplays (now past 75,000 according to BMI).Unfortunately, the successful singles and the infectuous holiday hit was no match for the 1990-1991 recession. Columbia dropped many artists, Paris By Air included. Haydee moved to New York, Terri Gil took over. "I'm Serious" was released independently in 1992 and "Mr. President" got favorable rave in Billboard. "Could open new doors," it went. Yep, Hurricane Andrew blew open more than a few doors, destroying the band's studio. Rebuilt and ready, the group released "All Around the Sound" in 1996 which was picked up and distributed in Europe by YYZ Records. 2002 marks a revival, with the band back in the studio to see if recessions or hurricanes can stop them this time!
Why this name?
Willie and I were polar opposites. Or so we thought. Through high school he was the kid falling asleep in class because he was working all night as a security guard while I was the brat with the silver spoon and the shiny car and shiny Gibson Flying V and Yamaha DX-7 that I didn't deserve. Yet he played in a popular cover band and I had written originals all my life. His band needed a keyboardist and I was pretty much the only one available. We soon found out how much we had in common, musically. Haydee came through a DJ friend who worked the sound at one of our shows. She was eccentric but a brilliant singer. When she left our studio always had a fresh supply of singer demos. Because our producer also did Expose and other notable stars like Pet Shop Boys and Enrique Iglesias, we had plenty of options. We didn't need to. Rique Alonso suggested one above the rest, another local, Teri Gil. Amazing.
Do you play live?
Yes, though we haven't had a fresh gig recently. When we play dance clubs we still play live segments over our taped music to always keep things fresh and unpredictable. Special moments? We've played over a hundred shows -- all over the world, literally. Too many to mention right now.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It has leveled the playing field. Everyone is now just one click away from being heard anywhere in the world.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
No. Maybe we're the only ones on Soundclick to say No, but we've been there, done that. We would love to license our songs to someone who would be interested in a record deal, but we're settled in our homey ways now.
