Cindy Alexander is winner of Songwriter of the Year (L.A. Music Awards) and her debut CD, produced by Dave Darling (Boxing Gandhis/Meredith Brooks) was nominated for Outstanding Indie Pop Album of the Year (L.A. Music Awards). She has been called "one of L.A.'s hottest artists (Music Connection), "Buzzing" (Hits Magazine) and draws standing room only crowds at the city's most popular clubs.
Why this name?
Cindy from the Brady Bunch. Seriously, I hate my full name ("Cynthia"). I only hear "Cynthia" from my parents when I've done something wrong.
Do you play live?
I play live. I play dead. Depends on my mood. Where?...anywhere that has a decent sound system and will feed my band. My favorite clubs are The Mint, The Troubadour and Genghis Cohen in Los Angeles. Yes, I LOVE playing - as much as....tiramasu and the wild thing. Special moments would include last year's Holloween Extravaganza in Santa Barbara where the stage was astro-turf, the back wall was covered in garbage bags, the ceiling had flourescent lighting and I forgot the name of the radio station that introduced us....7 people showed up. But we had a blast. Other special shows include the ones with The Bacon Brothers (Michael & Kevin Bacon), and that CERTAIN show where my dressing room was a meat locker.
If you make it big..?
I don't look at life with IF in front of it.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet is free international distribution. Artists no longer need a label or a million dollars to reach a mass audience.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
We'll see.......
Band History:
Unlike a lot of musicians, I don't have a sordid past. I could make one up for you if you like... I'm sure I can dig up enough painful moments for my VHI Behind the Music story, but until then, let it be known that I come from a wonderful family who, although I'm sure would rather I had chosen a more stable profession, supports me and just wants me to be happy.
I was fortunate enough to have piano lessons at age six and was even more fortunate when my teacher refused to work with me any longer because of my innate improvisational skills, which I utilized while practicing Beethoven and Bach.
Growing up, I was the typical over achiever, star of the school play, and teacher's pet (HATED that). I went to an all girls high school and therefore was socially "challenged" with remedial dating skills by the time I got to college. I graduated with a degree in Theatre and after a few C movies, episodic television, and repertory theatre gigs dropped it all to pursue music.
I never studied music (except for those few moments with piano teachers such as Mrs. T., who threatened to hit me with a ruler if I made a mistake). I taught myself how to fake guitar. And I fiddle with percussion.
The idea of a band was something that happened when I was hanging out at the Troubadour about 5 years ago. I was watching Vonda Shepard and thought, "I can do that." So I did. I liked the idea of writing and performing my own show, rather than acting someone else's script and being a character other than myself.
I was lucky to meet Paul Trudeau (he lived in the apartment above me and played his music way too loud), an amazing singer/songwriter who put my band together and co-wrote my first sets. He is still my favorite writing partner. I have an amazing band which includes (in different incarnations): Harvey Lane, Fren Asken, Bobby Breton, Jon Salter, Stacy Robin, Bart Ryan and Michael Farrell.
My first CD, "See Red" came out January 1999 and was produced mostly by David Darling - a genius. Paul also co-produced some of the tracks.
I hope you'll get a chance to check it out!

Your influences?
I'm influenced by the poetry in everyday life and am most inspired by unknown artists hanging out in coffee houses and hole in the wall clubs. I give a lot of merit to the music of Shawn Colvin, Rickie Lee Jones, Amy Mann, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Lucinda Williams, James Taylor, U2, and one of my favorite songs of all times is Howard Jones's "No One is to Blame."
Favorite spot?
Peaceful Valley, Colorado
Equipment used:
Piano, Guitar, Belgian Waffle Maker
Anything else...?
I need 8 hours of sleep.
