The first time Randy Kons was paid to sing a song, he made everyone turn around so that they couldn't watch. The song was You Are my Sunshine and the price was a dollar. "They use to get a kick out of listening to me singing that song as high as I could", he says, "but I hated how I sounded." He did keep the money.
The Northern Albertan started singing semi-professionally in his father's band when he was thirteen. "I had the choice of drums or bass guitar and I chose the bass because I wanted to stand up front." This also gave him the opportunity to start singing lead vocals as the band had played mainly instrumental old-time music.
He started writing songs a few years later. "I needed another waltz to sing so I decided to write my own."
He continued performing and writing after high school and toured as a solo act for six months. "That was the loneliest I've ever been in my life!" he laughs, "I rejected an agent's offer to send me across Canada because I thought I might go nuts if I spent any more time by myself!"
The lounge tour had given Randy a chance to road test many of his early original songs however, one of which, Emily, he is featuring here at Soundclick.
Randy is currently writing and recording songs that will eventually become an album. "I'll know when it's finished when I have a dozen songs that I can present as my best work." He also performs regularly in a popular Grande Prairie country/rock band called Shady Junction.
