Breaking the sound barrier STANDING IN THE SUN exceeds the boundaries of contemporary music pushing the parameters of standard rock sounds into the new millennium. Launching into sonic overdrive these modern music makers have transcended traditional musical genres into a realm all their own. Light years ahead of the music moguls corporate formulated swill this controversial new group has crossed uncharted territories of psychedelia and funk-rock coming up with a refreshing new sound that has captured the imagination audiences and astounded critics thru out cyber space. Hailed to be the first meaningful band to come along in years, these troubadours of the new millennium are burning a path straight up to the top of the charts. Find out why an avid army of supporters and the new music reviews have dubbed this modern music outfit THE WAVE OF THE FUTURE, MUSIC FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM or THE NEXT GENERATION IN MUSIC...(Reviews from Audio Galaxy, AMP3 and Rolling Stone Review).
Why this name?
The band was in the windy city and the streets were covered with that grey ice that tells you winter has been here for some time...I stared out the window while I sipped my brew and outside I saw the long coated office workers grabbing cabs or driving by....mothers struggling to get their children to school on time...blue collar workers were coming and going grabbing their hot jolt of coffee and morning snack. I thought these are the real heroes... how much courage it must take to do it all over again everyday... these are the people that make it all happen. My mind began to wander and I thought what are all these problems you hear about each day, they aren't coming from these people. As the morning sun showed itself and warmed the chill around my face I thought, we are all on this same mud-ball, 3rd stone from the sun, an island in a galaxy of planets and stars - living under this same sun, how can a great civilization do such wonders with the technology and at the same time allow atrocities in the world without helping. My gaze fixed on a pole outside the shop sporting a picture on a large poster of a politician running for office. I toyed with the idea whether decisions would be different if he were appointed to office for more than one lifetime. Would the parliamentary decisions of his ilk create bigger and more dastardly problems then the ones being solved and would the sundry of problems that grace the newspapers and other gossip pages never exist. Just then a man stopped outside the window only a couple of feet from where I was sitting separated by the glass store front. On his wrist was a plastic bracelet, he had just been released from the local sanatarium worked over by the psychiatrists to the point of being a vegetable that needed society's support to maintain. His bottle of pills hung from an open pocket of his dingy green coat. He moved on, chasing down a nicely dressed woman who finally paid him off to be rid of his pestering. Later that day I hopped the tour bus and caught a few winks before we stopped at a diner in one of those sleepy little rural towns in the heartland. Their was a noticeable difference between the bustling of the city and where I was now. People were more open, more interested in each other, more caring and happier. I didn't notice the worry about survival that was prevalent in the city. I could hear the warm conversation between the swigs of coffee and mouthfuls of eggs and thought of all the people under the sun moon and stars sharing this space, it really is a wonderful thing this life we share. I began jotting down words on a napkin and when the tour bus pulled out of that town I felt I gained a little understanding ...Their was no real separation or differences of any magnitude other than what was manufactured by those who feel there is benefit from keeping people down, unaware, confused and in fear...The band name refers to a common bond we have ...it could be any or all the things we have in common but we chose the sun out of its symbology and in opposition of those that fear a unity among the people of earth, thru their lies create the individuation among us.
Do you play live?
We play about 200 shows a year, primarily at colleges, theaters and clubs. We come from being mainly a live band. For us the fans are the show. A lot of the places we have played have had a hard time keeping the doors on the place, they always seem to get ripped off the hinges. It's an odd thing. We don't have an answer except that possibly the owners should look at getting better hinges on the doors.
If you make it big..?
If we make it big . . . hmmm. Make what big? We've been trying to make it big but we may need some help. I think we all need help making it big. What is making it big anyway. This is really not where we're at as a band or what we are seeking. While I admit that we love what we do and love people and enjoy making music for them, it is not our primary goal to make it big. This is what we do and we just want to do it well enough that people seek it and get off on it and that we can continue to create. We feel that if you have some power and don't use it to make things better then you're misusing it - We'd love to open the world's mind up.
Band History:
Emerging from the cutting edge of the ever changing musical horizon the controversial new group STANDING IN THE SUN began as a musical experiment and developed into a rave new sound. Eclectic and starkly original the fresh and aggressive style paved the way from club and college circuit to opening for major international recording artists. Their dynamic and independent approach gained support of several studios, managers, engineers and executives in the music industry providing the bulk of resources in recording of the band's self-titled CD. After the pilgrimage to "The City of Angels" and moving from tour bus to new headquarters at WHOLE TRACK STUDIOS recording began and performances in the local venues. The glut of L.A. bands and radio acts covering the heavy rhythm based parodies prompted STANDING IN THE SUN to take a forward look into the current music scene. Throwing aside the trip-hop beat crazed contortions back dropped in white noise experimentations and transient interludes STANDING IN THE SUN took to the studio developing a bold new sound in the next evolution in modern music. With a freshness and energy so lacking in today's music STANDING IN THE SUN evokes a powerful and emotional performance in what is certain to be some of the strongest recordings of today. Breathing new life into a stagnant music scene bloated by a corporate formula already top heavy with profits this revolutionary new act incorporates their innovative new sound in an emotional and moving series of tracks becoming the fastest rising new music on the web.
Your influences?
Standing in the Sun is a Post Modern Alternative rock band. We get our sound by driving beats and rhythms, slippy psychedelic guitars, grinding ethereal synths, futuristic samples, and concentrating on moving and interesting lyrics, vocals we can feel.
Favorite spot?
Being in the company of someone you love.
Equipment used:
We use Mesa Boogie Triaxis, Old Fenders and Vox Amps, Eden Bass Equipment, SWR cabinets, Fenders and Gibsons and Yamaha guitars - Gretsch Drums, AKAI MPC 2000, Korg Z1, Triton, Roland VDrums, S1000 Sampler, Decimator, Akai DR16 - Roger Mayer electronics.
Anything else...?
Listen to the music and decide for yourself what the influences are. What really matters is does the music influence you and how? A great majority of our influences are not musical in nature. Things like the drugging of children in our schools and the fact that there are people in existence that believe that drugs can fix problems. The lack of any effective solutions to the problems we all face living today- the fact that most of what we learn about in our schools does little to prepare us to deal with anything in the real world. About rising crime statistics coupled with the fact that the authorities we have entrusted to deal with these problems are completely ineffective and have done little or nothing to abate the rising tides. If the medical and psychiatric profession is really trying to heal then why have the hospitals gotten so huge? And why are there are more diseases and ill than ever? If the product of the courts and police is to reduce crime then why is there more of it than ever? These are simply a few of the things we see. We feel we would be remiss if we did not say that seeing these things - witnessing the steady decline did not ultimately influence our music. The 1st step to handling a situation is knowing something about it. You won't read about it in the running dog press that write the story before leaving the news room. You won't read about it in magazines where the advertisers dictate the content What you do read about are children shooting up schools but never that every one of them were under a psychiatrists care and on psychiatric drugs. Assassination of Bobby Kennedy, John Lennon and EVERY serial killer had one thing in common...psychiatric patients on psychiatric drugs...and when President Regan emptied the asylums where the victims of psychiatric abuse were housed only then was their a homeless problem. To control these people psychiatric drugs were introduced; 40% of the homeless in downtown Los Angeles are on Ritalin as well as 5,000,000 school children. Makes you wonder why the answer sought is chemical straight jackets and control. Psychiatry in its desperate effort to get a result is only able to cause an effect on its patient without ever curing. When you consider the escalating problems in the courts, schools, homes and crime directly correlate with the amount of tax payers money funding Psychiatrists and their institutions to handle the problem you may come up with entirely different perspective then what has been fed to you in the "news". Psychiatry has always been state supported from the concentration camps of WWII Germany and South Africa's apartheid as well as the camps in Kosova. All had one thing in common .... psychiatrists were behind every one of these situations and now it turns out even Hitler had several psychiatrists drugging and whatever else. Sounds far fetched?? That's the idea...Psychiatry has always been about mind control from the CIA experiments of the 50's and 60's to the Russian Pavlov and his dog. With STANDING IN THE SUN there are no musical boundaries or rules we are influenced by every musical style and sound and noise in existence. From screeching busses and trains, to everything on the radio. These all produce musical ideas for us and this is what you will find as the influences in our music. This song was written out of a firm belief that something can be done even tho "the authorities" out of their own personal interest would have you believe otherwise.
