The musical collective known as " Avida Dollars " was formed in early 2001 in Adelaide, Australia by two like minded musicians Paul Smyth and Paul Cartwright. The two met and bonded through a like minded love of music. The two musicians are a perfect blend and almost musical bookends. Smyth has an extensive knowledge of technology and and amazing ability with audio treatments, whilst Cartwright adds his talents on a variety of instruments such as Fretless Bass, Electric and Acoustic guitars and Keyboards.
Why this name?
We are both great admirers of the surrealist painter Salvador Dali. The Surrealist Andre Breton created this derogatory anagram in disgust of Dali's growing fame and financial success.
Do you play live?
We do not play live yet. We are not sure how we can accomplish this at the moment.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Paul (S) - Tedious question.
Paul (C) - I concur !
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Paul (S) - I really don't know. We would consider this option very carefully.
Paul (C) - I would definitely tread carefully. We would not want to put our music at risk.
Band History:
It's full of holes. The holes are infected.
Your influences?
They range from UK based bands like Japan, NoMan, Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, Bill Nelson, The Associates, early Simple Minds and Cabaret Voltaire to the European Surrealist and Dadist movements with visionaries such as Jean Cocteau, Salvador Dali, Yves Tanguy and Francis Picabia.
Favorite spot?
Paul (S) - Drop me off somewhere in Northern Italy although I am happy in my new town (Sydney).
Paul (C) - On the Left Bank ( Paris ) although I have never been there, but it looks fantastic in my mind !
Equipment used:
Paul (S) - I still love my hardware synths. Software emulations are not satisfying to use. We record with computers and samplers.
Paul (C) - A plethora of Basses, Guitars and gadgets.
