My name is Bryan Murphy. I have been a singer/songwriter for about 9 years now. I was a solo artist for about 2 years recently, and my new band "The Shills" formed in February/04. My sound is, well, different. Its "melodic, dramatic" rock, I guess. And other than that, you'd have to listen. !NEW!: As of 6/4/04, there are recordings of me and the full band! See "music" page to listen. The Shills are about the same sound, we rearranged some tunes of mine, and the other guitarist helps with all other writing.
To me, the most important aspect to my/our music is freshness/originality, and a close second is vocals/lyrics. I was in college, did 2 years on a BA in jazz trumpet performance and composition at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. Not exactly my long term goals, but I wanted to give college a shot after high school, and I have a deep love for jazz music, and the trumpet. But a break was due, thus I focused my energies to this.

The music on this page is me and a guitar, and 2 cuts from the bands new demo.

The tunes with just me are acoustic guitar tracks and most of the dummy vocals of those tunes. The band has been writing and playing as much as possible, but we're still new. Slowly, but onward...

I'm living in Boston, working in a loan broker office telemarketing, and playing in and around the T's and streets of Boston. Come find me at Gov't Center (blue line downstairs, hot as a bi***), or at Davis Sq, Porter Sq...Even Harvard Sq, if I can kick someone out. In any case, have a listen live, cause thats where it all counts. I'll keep other dates posted, as (painfully) slowly as they come.

Enjoy my music, and please email me and give me comments for insight. I listen, and want ideas from everyone, don't hesistate.

Why this name?
Its my name
Do you play live?
I love to play live, it is my bloodline. I play mostly in Boston now, and I need more gigs. I would really love to have a band again.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet has done WONDERS for the industry. Now, anyone who wants to have mass attention can get it for free. Artists make little to no cut from album sales, and so forth. All an artist's money lies in touring, merchandise, and advertising. The internet has opened the doorway that the corperate RIAA would have never opened.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes, but I would have to own my music exclusively (as I am the sole composer) and I would have to be able to put my files on the internet and charge low ticket prices for touring.
Band History:
Bryan Murphy - Guitar, vocals, lyrics, arrangments

I grew up in Foxboro MA, about 20 minutes south of Boston. An aweful place for socialism, but a great place to learn music the right way while you're young. I have been playing the trumpet for 13 years, the guitar for about 9, the drums and bass for about 6-7 years, and I've been singing and composing for as long as I can remember. I like my music to be VERY unpredictable, but at the same time, all encompasing. I never want to alienate a listener. I write it to be sophisticated and totally original with a flare of folk/indie/rock tradition. My backround is along the lines of classic rock n' roll, singer/songwriters, avante rock, jazz... and my own coalesqed inversion of how all I hear, plops out on paper. I really hope you dig what you hear, and please let me know what you think. You're the people listening, your opinion is number one.
Your influences?
To me, the greatest American genious of music was Duke Ellington. I would site him as a great influence compositionally, but not sound wise. The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Queen, Pedro the Lion, Jeff Buckley, Hawksley Workman, Mr.bungle, jazz masters of the past and present, and a bit more are my stem sound influences.
Favorite spot?
My favorite spot would be the corner of my old kitchen in Rochester NY. I did most of the composing of my newest works in that spot naked, and LATE. But, my favorite city would have to be Boston, its home, what can I say?
Equipment used:
I use a Yamaha (custom) acoustic electric guitar. This guitar is kind of a frankenstein, I spent a lot of time getting the right sound on this one, spent 9 years with it now, its my baby. I also use a Jackson Performer electric guitar. I love this guitar, its a rock, and I have had it for 5 years without a problem. With the axes I use a Fender Princton Chorus 120 watt amp. Various pedals and such, but mostly my footswitch for chorus and dist for the PC. I use mostly Elixer 13's on my acoustic, and Elixer 10's on my electric (poly, or nano, whatever I'm in the mood for). But if I can't afford those (whis is often) I use the same guage, cheap.
