Hey, welcome to Island, a somewhat experimental music project. My name is Thomas Mattheij and music is my passion. I play guitar, sing, compose and produce. The tracks i'm uploading at the moment are some melodic electronic tracks of wich I'm not entirely sure in what genre they belong, but hey; f*** genres! Is this the 21st century or what?!?
Hehe if u have an idea, feel free to let me know. I'd be honored if u'd listen to them and give me your opinion.
The tracks started off as background tracks for guitar music, but soon enough they got a life of their own so speak. Maybe I'll add instumental parts, maybe not. I'm working on a poppy guitar/electronical demo, wich will be uploaded as soon as it's completed.

Hope u enjoy!

-Thomas
Why this name?
I'm trying to generate a somewhat utopian feel, cuz dreaming about a (near-)perfect world is a hobby of mine, or more of an obsession really. Nothing to worry about though ;). Island is the name of a Utopian novel by Aldoux Huxley. Maybe it's also a slight reference to the movie 'The Beach', allthough that one's about a would be utopia gone bad, wich is bound to happen when it gets forced onto people, i guess.
Do you play live?
Not yet, allthough i most definately would! :)
I need some better equipment first i fear.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
With a bit of luck, more and more people will search the internet for inspiring artists instead of letting a few record label bosses decide what they should like, thus making the music industry far more democratic and fair. Instead of a few mediocre artists making more money than they can possibly spend wisely and millions of artists struggling, there could be a situation in wich millions of artists can make a decent living, and consumers have a far wider range of good music to choose from.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Maybe... I'd have to be completely free in a musical sense. Moreover i would demand freedom in delivering my egalitarian message.
A substantial percentage of revenues would be spent on increasing quality for musicians. Perhaps under my then to be record label. (all very hypothetically speaking offcourse).
Your influences?
Nick Drake, Jose Gonzales, Coldplay, Muse, Lio, Kosheen, Chemical Brothers, Chicane, Thievery Corporation, Metallica, Boudewijn de Groot, Daft Punk, Stardust, Phoenix and many more.
