I have played in Jazz and Dance bands all my life and even had my own Rock band, but its only in the last 5 years or so that I have really got back in to the sounds of the Rat Pack era and Frank Sinatra and gone solo. I cant believe the success I have had and how popular I have been. Whether I am doing a pure Sinatra set or a mix of Sinatra, Dean Martin with a little Matt Monro and Tony Bennett thrown in, I still get a kick out of seeing people enjoy something I do because I love doing it, not because its my job
Why this name?
By brother Andy is a great saxophone player and naturally he was known as "Stan Getz" by the rest of the band, being his brother I became "Steve Getz" and thats what I have been known as for 25 years, no point in changing in it now.
Do you play live?
Only ever play live, had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the studio to record my album "to be frank". I had Laryngitis recently but had to perform at a wedding in a large hotel, I couldnt cancel and let them down. I managed to warm my voice up and thought I could just pull off the hour I had been booked for, and then disaster the other entertainment didnt turn up. I ended up doing two hours and got a ten minute standing ovation from a packed audience and all the hotel staff, it was a special moment, I had saved the day, pulled off the gig of a life time and they have loved it. I felt about ten feet tall that day.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It has been great for artists like myself. My music is not mainstream and it is hard for artists like myself to find a medium where we are accessible to a mass audience. The internet gives us that medium and mp3 gives that audience the opportunity to take our music anywhere, can anyone tell me how we would have done it ten years ago ?
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I would have to say yes if the terms where right, my music has longevity so will always appeal to the right audience, but integrity is also important so the deal needs to be right.
Band History:
There is full bio on my website if you really want my life story and inside leg measurement, please visit www.stevegetz.co.uk
Your influences?
You would probably expect me to say Paul McCartney and John Lennon, well it is Paul McCartney and John Lennon so I wont disappoint you ! Of course I am influenced by the great man himself Frank Sinatra and the whole Rat Pack era.
Favorite spot?
Portsmouth, I was born and raised here and having travelled the world for twenty years I settled back here to raise my family.
Anything else...?
There are many acts like mine and they headline as tribute acts, I am not a tribute act, I am Steve Getz. My voice is my talent, I am not a lookalike or a soundalike, I am just me. I interpret the songs I sing my way and sing them the way I think they should be sung and I hope I do them justice and that true greats like Franks Sinatra would approve. You'll find a free download here and more samples on my website and I am sure once you have listened to them you will know I sing from the heart, I enjoy what I do and I hope that in sharing my music with you in this way, then one day you may just venture out and experiene the sounds of swing and the big band live, the way it should be heard.
